Criminal Court. - Monday - Seth Hawker was indicted for the wilful murder of a black native woman, at Illawarra, or the Five islands, on the 15th April last. The principal features attending this case are as follow:- The prisoner was an overseer upon an estate at Illawarra, belonging to Captain Brooks (the Magistrate that, had committed the prisoner to take his trial for the offence with which he now stood charged before the Court); and, upon the night of the 15th, was alarmed by the violent barking of the dogs upon the farm. The prisoner was induced to arise, and in company with others proceeded, without hesitation, in the direction to which the watchful animals conducted them. The prisoner was lost sight of for a few moments by his companions, in which interim the discharge of the musket was heard, which he had seized in the house upon the first alarm. When he returned, the prisoner said he thought he had shot something, or somebody. He was desired to return to the dwelling with his companions, and reload the piece; and again went in pursuit, the dogs continuing to bark. The prisoner, with another man, proceeded through a corn field, which was enclosed, and just as they had quitted it, on the off side, a figure was beheld in the act of endeavouring to effect its flight. The prisoner fired, and the poor object fell, which (to be brief) turned out to be unfortunate black native woman. The poor thing, it is supposed, was shot dead, as the body was found the next morning much mangled by the dogs. Two nets, such as the natives carry their food in, were found containing shelled maize, one of which was full, and held about a peck. The prisoner was properly advised, by a brother overseer in the same concern, to hasten to the district constable with all speed, and inform him of the unhappy circumstance, so that the nearest Magistrate might become acquainted with the fact, and proceed accordingly. It was proved by the constable that the prisoner followed the directions given him, and hence became committed. From the whole of the evidence on the part of the prosecution it was easily observable, that no murderous intention had existed in the mind of the prisoner; nor did any circumstance transpire, during the arduous examination of the witnesses by His Honor the Judge Advocate, to enfix even the most remote degree of manslaughter upon the prisoner. As was the case in former times, and not many years since well to be remembered, in consequence of the decisive measures that were resorted to by the Government for the protection of the settler, and his family, the natives are excessively troublesome and annoying in the neighbourhood of the Five Islands, during the corn season. This last season they bad been remarkably active in committing depredations; in the space of one night 100 or two of them would take the liberty of clearing a field of every cob, and thus ruin the hopes of a poor hardworking man's family. This species of bitter robbery had been oft repeated, and the natives became worse daily, purloining every thing that came in their way. One man, of the name of Graham, who has a wife and large family, was near being killed in the act of pursuing those sable robbers. One night a party had stripped his field of its produce; and in the morning himself, and eldest son, went in pursuit. They fell in with five of the natives, who had two nets full of the preceding night's spoil. He required them to surrender the corn, when they made off Graham then fired at the legs of one the natives who had a net; when one of them, armed with a bundle of spears, was preparing to throw at Graham, who lost no time in making up to him, and with the butt end of his musket broke all the spears, which would have been immediately discharged at him, had not one of the other natives, who had flown, taken the 'wammarah' with him; to which circumstance Graham, and his son, may doubtless owe their lives. The native then took from his girdle a tomahawk, with which he endeavoured to cleave the head of Graham, when the latter, at the same instant, seized from the hand of his son a sword, with which he cut off the hand of the native that held the tomahawk, when the black immediately made off, with the loss of his limb. This circumstance came out, among others, upon the tral, which showed that the prisoner was only endeavouring to protect that property that was confided to his care, though it was to be lamented that a life (in such a case) had been untimely destroyed. His Honor the Judge Advocate wished it to he properly and lastingly impressed upon the minds of all, that the aboriginal natives have as much right to expect justice at the hands of the British Law, as Europeans; and that such ever would be the case;- in this instance it was exemplified. The prisoner was acquitted; but previous to being liberated from custody, received that pathetic and energetic admonition, which, it is to be anxiously hoped, will ever remain indelibly and profitably stamped upon his conscience. The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser 14 June 1822
A black gin was found dead yesterday morning, near Mr. M'Carthy's Inn (Shoalhaven). From marks of violence on the body it is expected the deceased was murdered but whether by white or black is unknown. 12/9/1856Empire 17 September 1856
“Roger, a good-looking Black (it is asserted he is of full blood, but I believe him to be Half caste), having killed one wife, had taken to himself another, in 1858, or thereabouts. Towards the end of 1859, a farmer ploughing in his paddock observed Roger very busy with a stick I near to a beautiful myrtle brush. The farmer watched him a minute or two, saw him throw down the stick, and walk away. Hodge returned to his ploughing, believing Roger had killed a snake. But an hour afterwards he saw the Black return, examine the spot, drive a stake into something, and then make off to a neighbouring public-house. Tho farmer left his plough, and discovered the body of Roger’s second wife, with the head beaten to a jelly, and covered with ghastly wounds. The farmer followed the murderer, collared him at the public-house, and handed him over to the Police. After an inquest held, Roger was committed and took his trial he was found guilty of manslaughter and got twelve months. THE BLACKS OF SHOALHAVENThe Sydney Morning Herald Wednesday 20 December 1871
ESCAPE OP A MURDERER.-On Sunday evening last, an aboriginal black, known by the soubriquet of Roger, was sent on board the steamer Kiama, then lying at Greenwell Point, below Shoalhaven, in custody of police constable Ross, for conveyance to Sydney to await his trial for a capital offence-he having murdered his wife, a half-caste woman, under circumstances (it is said) of the greatest atrocity. The prisoner was secured by handcuffs, and, in order to make security doubly sure, he was ironed to one of the stanchions in the vessel's fore-cabin. The constable then laid down by the side of the prisoner for the night, and when he awoke in the morning his man was non est, he having by some means slipped his irons and escaped. The Kiama left shortly after the discovery was made, and up to that time the escaped murderer had not been captured. The Sydney Morning Herald Wednesday 26 March 1862

A report is in circulation that an aboriginal here is in custody under the accusation of murdering his gin, known as 'White Kitty,' on Thursday night last. I have not heard the particulars, but from the peculiar habits of the blacks, it is doubtful whether legal evidence of the murder can be obtained.Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950) Tuesday 25 March 1862 p 3

Florence Adamson, a married woman, living at No. 8 William-street, Adamstown, charged W. Will, a resident of the same suburb, with having assaulted her Mr. T. A. Braye appeared for the complainant, and Mr. J. D. Reid for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty. Complainant gave evidence that defendant was her landlord and until recently, when a dividing fence was erected, they shared the same back yard. On October 14 the postman came with a telegram for defendant, and gave it to witness's little daughter. Witness spoke to her daughter.
Witness said, “I will not have my daughter running around the streets delivering telegrams to that man. The postman should have left it at O'Hagons, where he always is.” Defendant appeared immediately, and rushed into the front room after locking the front door. He aid to witness, “How dare you mention that woman's name.” Witness said she did not mention the name in any way disrespectfully. Defendant struck witness over the eye, and applied an offensive to name to her. He continued the assault, using both feet and hands. “Eventually I got rid of him by the back way? said witness. “I threw a dish of water over him, and he ran like a dog when you throw water on it.” In reply to Mr. Reld, witness said that her husband had left her. He was a gambler, that was his trouble.
Mr. Red Did you not assault a man with a paling and put him in bed for a fortnight ?-I assaulted a man, who was trying to get through a back window where my children were.
Witness added that she did not suggest here was anything wrong at OHagon's.
The people were known to her, and defendant worked up there. She did not know if defendant was a German. He was more like a Turk than a German.
Corroborative evidence was given by Phyllis and Florence Adamson, daughters of the complainant. Defendant told the Court that he heard the complainant say to her daughter, “I won't allow you to take any letters to that dirty German brute.” She went on to vilify him further and made allegations about a neighbouring family. Witness went to the front door, and asked the complainant why she was dragging in the names of other people. Complainant picked up a broom, but her married daughter inter ened, and she then caught him by the hair and dragged him into the kitchen.
To free himself he struck her on the face. He denied having kicked the complainant. “I think this man assaulted the woman,” sold the magistrate. “Beause of the fact that he rushed into the house. I cannot believe that she dragged him from the front to the back ofthe bouse. I don't consider it a serious assault.” Defendant was fined £1, with S2 10s costs.Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate (NSW : 1876 - 1954) Saturday 21 October 1922 p 11

In less than thirty-nine hours after the decease of Mrs. Dinning, another family in Bulli was being visited by the Angel of Death. On Sunday evening, 29th May, the much beloved wife and mother, the ever dutiful and affectionate daughter, Anne Elizabeth Adey, passed from death unto life. She was born in the year 1864 at Mount Pleasant, near Wollongong. She had a godly training. At the age of 18 she was converted, and for several years was a teacher in the Bulli Sabbath School, where she rendered excellent service. She was of an affectionate disposition, always considerate, doing her best to ease the burdens of others. She was married on the 24th May, 1888, to Stephen Adey, a respected member of the church. Her illness was of brief duration. She was perfectly well on the Friday, the next day finds her on a sick bed, unconscious, and on the following Monday her body was committed to the tomb. She has fallen on sleep, and the happy consolation is now afforded to the sorrowing husband and family that she is 'Far from a world of grief and sin, With God eternally shut in.'The Methodist (Sydney, NSW : 1892 - 1954) Saturday 11 June 1892 p 8

MRS. E. ADLINGTON.
Death has claimed one of the grand old women of Wollongong, in the person of Mrs. Elizabeth Adlington, widow of the late Mr. Thomas Adlington, who passed away on Saturday night at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Edgar, aged 72 years.
The deceased was born at Shropshire, England, and left England for Australia with her husband 43 years ago. The family first settled in South Australia, and afterwards went to
Melbourne, and then moved to New South Wales, settling in this district, where the deceased has resided ever since. The late Mrs. Adlington has been associated with the Salvation Army for about 30 years, and was a devoted worker for it in the days when the members suffered prosecution. She occupied practically every office in the local corps except that of officer in charge, and she practised what she preached so far as religion and charity were concerned. It was a pleasure to converse with her, as she took a broad outlook of life, and it can be safely said that she had passed to a higher life without leaving a single enemy behind, her. She was the mother of 13 children, two of whom died in England, and two in Australia. Those surviving are, Messrs. George, Ernest, Henry, Thomas, and Ray, and Mesdame's Edgar, Reid, and Smith, all of this district. The remains were interred in the Salvation Army portion of the Wollongong Cemetery on Monday, Captain Terracini officiating at the graveside. Obituary.
As briefly stated on Monday, Sarah Jane Adlington, wife of Mr. T. G. Adlington, passed away at a private hospital after an illness lasting over a period of about a fortnight, though her health previous to this was not all that could be desired. She underwent an operation and though it was successful, it was seen that her condition was very serious, and despite the fact that everything possible in the way of medical skill and careful nursing was done, it was of no avail and she passed away surrounded by her husband and family on Monday afternoon at three o'clock. The late Mrs. Adlington was only 48 years of age, and with her husband came to Wellington from Wollongong some six months ago. During her short residence here, she made many friends, being a woman of bright personality, she soon gained the respect and esteem of all she came in contact with. She was an ardent worker on behalf of the Salvation Army, of which religious body she was a member. She is survived by a husband and family of six children, two daughters and four sons, who will have the sympathy of a large circle of people in their hour of trouble. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, the funeral being a large and representative one, a token of the esteem in which she was held in Wellington. The Salvation Army Band headed the procession and played appropriate hymns. The body was encased in a beautiful polished maple coffin, silver mounted, and was laid to rest in the Salvation Army portion of the local cemetery, the services at the graveside being read by Commandant Evans.
A large number of wreaths were laid on the grave. The funeral was conducted by Mr. C. J. Shakespeare.
She leaves a family of four sons and two daughters, Mrs. Hows, of Wollongong being the eldest daughter, and William, Joseph, George, Violet and Keith are the other children. Mrs. Adlington's brothers and sisters are, Richard Bird, of Portland, Walter (Wollongong), Mrs. E. Adlington (Wollongong), and Mrs. W. Crawford (Wollongong). Messrs Richard, Walter and Mrs. E. Adlington were here for the funeral. Mr. Adlington's brothers, Ern, Harry, Tom and his sister, Mrs. Edgar, were also present at the funeral, and Mrs. Kew, who was Mrs. Adlington's life friend, also came from Wollongong when she heard of Mrs Adlington's sickness and was present at the funeral. Death of Mrs. Akers.
Mrs. Henry Akers, whose death was reported in last issue, came to East Kangaloon 42 years ago, and she resided there until her death at the advanced age of 96 years. Hers was an interesting personality and she retained her mental faculties to the last. She had seen convict gangs working on the roads, and her stories of the bushranging days and gold rushes were a constant delight to her friends. In her early days there were no schools, and the priest visited only at very long intervals, so that the training of her children fell upon their mother.
Mrs. Akers had ten sons and three daughters, of whom; one daughter and four sons (fine stamps of Australian manhood) survive; there are 96 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs Akers was one of the first to charter a boat to run from Shellharbour to Sydney, and the late Mr. Akers was one of the first to join in the movement which eventually resulted in the establishment of the Berrima District F. and D. Company. A fine type of the Australian pioneer of the last century, Mrs. Akers will long live in the affections of her relatives and a host of friends. LATE MRS. ALLEN.
READ THE 'HERALD' FOR EIGHTY YEARS.
WOLLONGONG, Thursday.
The death occurred to-day of Mrs Emily Elizabeth Allen, who would have celebrated her 95th birthday next Tuesday had she lived. She was born In Sussex (England), and came to Australia with her parents when two years of age. She first resided on Church Hill, Sydney, and remembered convicts working in various parts of Sydney. She afterwards went to reside at Liverpool, where she married the late Mr. Thomas Allen, and subsequently went to reside with her husband at Wollongong where she had lived for 65 years. It was her boast that she had read every Issue of the “Sydney Morning Herald” for 80 years. The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW: 1842 - 1954) Friday 30 November 1928
DEATH OF MRS. ALLEN.
AGED 95 YEARS.
Mrs. Emily Elizabeth Allen, one of the grand old women of Wollongong, passed away on Thursday at her residence, Myrtle Street, Mount Drummond, aged 95 years. She was born at Sussex, England, on December 4th, 1833, and came to Australia with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Whiteman, when she was two years of age. Her first home was in Church Hill, Sydney, and they afterwards went to reside at Liverpool. For a time they occupied the residence from which Hume, the explorer, starter on his memorable exploration. She married the late Mr. Thomas Allen, and they came to settle in Wollongong about 65 years ago, and she had practically lived in the town ever since. Her husband opened the first show held at Wollongong, at Market Square, and he judged the butter section in the show. He bought the land at the corner of Crown and Keira Streets, and on it erected a building part of which forms what is now known as the Freemason's Hotel. At that time it was used by Mr. Allen as a store. He also established a flour mill opposite what is now known as Bode's Hotel, and milled wheat that was grown on Garden Hill. Mrs. Allen retained her faculties’ right up to within a week of her death. She could converse about the convicts working in Sydney when she was a child. As an evidence of her wonderful vitality for one of such, advanced years, she could read and write up to a brief time before her death. She never had a day's serious illness during the whole of her life. She read the Sydney Morning Herald every day for over 80 years. She will be best remembered for her many acts of kindness, and her good qualities as a neighbour. When the Albert Memorial Hospital, was situated in Flinders Street she used to visit it regularly, and make gifts of flowers, etc. The issue of her marriage was 12 children, of whom the survivors are : — Mrs. W. Newell, Arncliffe; Mrs. R. Shaw, Wyalong; Mrs. T. McKaughan, Liverpool; Miss. L. Allen, Wollongong; Ex-Sergeant W. P. Allen, of Bexley. In addition there are a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. The remains will be interred in the Wollongong cemetery this afternoon. SUDDEN DEATH OF MRS. ALLSEP.
It is with deep regret that we find ourselves obliged to record the death — awful in its suddenness — of Mrs. Allsep, wife of Mr. William Allsep, the well-known confectioner, of Wollongong, which occurred about half-past one o’clock on Sunday morning. Mrs. Allsep was engaged in the shop until after 11 o'clock on Saturday night, being in her usual robust state of health, and retired to rest about midnight, having partaken of a hearty supper. Shortly afterwards she was seized with an apoplectic fit, and, although Dr. Wade was summoned as hastily as possible and arrived without delay, the end had come before he reached the house.
The deceased lady, who leaves a family of two sons, was of a very kind and amiable disposition and much liked by all who knew her ; and the greatest sympathy is felt for those who by her sudden demise have been bereft of a devoted and affectionate wife and mother. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the remains being interred in the Wesleyan cemetery, where the burial service was impressively conducted by Rev, J. W. Gardiner. ATTEMPTED RAPE.
James Windibank was charged with having attempted to commit a rape on Annie Maria Almaide, a married woman residing at Port Kembla. He pleaded not guilty, and challenged quite a dozen of the jurymen.
Prosecutrix deposed that her husband was a laborer, employed by Mr. M. O'Donnell ; accused came to the door of her residence on the 24th November at noon, her husband being then away at work, and asked for a drink ; he also asked witness if she had any children ; witness replied 'No ' ; witness then shut the door ; on her husband's return to dinner he invited accused to dinner; after dinner she told her husband she was going to her mother's place; accused heard that; accused and her husband left together; witness departed for her mother's and on passing a shed at O'Neil's accused came out and asked to be directed to the Smelting Works; witness directed him, but he followed her; told him not to follow her, but to go the Smelting Works; accused continued to follow her, and after crossing a gully committed the offence alleged ; her husband and a young man named Coyle came running up, and accused ran away. Never saw accused before.
Gross-examined by Mr. Owen, who appeared for accused, witness admitted having had some conversation with accused when he was following her. Louis Almaide, husband of prosecutrix, deposed that he knew the accused, having worked with him; observed accused following his wife when she was on her way to her mother's and watched; saw accused catch hold of her, and then an over.
Constable Kenny deposed to the arrest of the accused, who lived with his mother-in-law at Wollongong; accused told witness that Mrs. Almaide was a consenting party.
James Windibank deposed that he was a married man, and had been working in the Kembla mine; being unable to earn wages there, he sought work at Port Kembla; returned by the railway line; called at a house by the line, which was Almaide's, and asked Mrs. Almaide for a drink; in the course of conversation with Mrs. Almaide she told him she was going to her mother's in the afternoon; she made an appointment with witness, indicating O'Neil's shed as the place for accused to meet her; she was a consenting party; had never been in that locality before, and knew none of the residents there.
Mr. Owen addressed the jury on behalf of the accused. His Honor's Summary was strongly unfavorable to the accused, whom he designated a self-admitted traitor.
The jury brought in a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to mercy on the ground that the prisoner probably thought he had encouragement. In reply to the prisoner's request for leniency, His Honor asked him if he would withdraw the Charges he had made against
Mrs. Almaide. Prisoner did not withdraw. Sentenced to 12 month' imprisonment with hard labor in Goulburn gaol, and thereafter to enter into his own recognizances to be of good bebhaviour for three years. South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus (NSW : 1900 - 1954) Saturday 7 February 1903 p 7

About 11 o'clock on Saturday morning, whilst driving along the main street, Mrs. Amos, Manchester Square, was thrown out of a vehicle and sustained severe cuts to her head, whilst she also suffered acutely from the shock. The unfortunate woman was carried across to the
Central hotel, and, after receiving attention from Dr. Stevenson, was able to leave for her home. The accident was caused through the horse becoming frightened at a train crossing the railway bridge. The animal bolted, but had not gone far when It was brought to a stand- , still before incurring any damage to itself or the vehicle. J. Howell Price, incumbent of Christ Church,
The remains of the deceased were conveyed in a Moss Vale hearse from Burrawang to the place of interment, and were followed by a large number of sympathising friends as far as the top of the Jamberoo Mountain, and about twenty of them came through the whole distance and with a goodly number of friends who joined the procession in town were present at the solemn service for the dead. The deceased was the eldest daughter of Mr. Thomas Wilson (an old resident of this district) and though born in County Fermangh, Ireland, she came with the family, when very young, to the colony, and was fifty two years old at the date of her death, She was married to her now bereaved husband in 1864, by Dr, Burnier in the old Church of England, a wooden building, which, as many old residents will remember, then stood at the junction of Bong Bong and Manning streets, opposite the property of the late David Smith. The happy pair first settled on a farm at Mount Salom, the property of Mr. George Grey; removing thence to the property of the late Dr Menelo, at Jamberoo, afterwards they jointly established the baking business at Gerringong now occupied by Mr. E. Keys they subsequently lived at Middle Creek and Fountaindale, and for a little over a year before her demise on their own property at Burrawang deceased had no family of her 0wn, but having the true motherly instinct she assisted her relatives in raring their families and w… The Kiama Independent, and Shoalhaven Advertiser (NSW: 1863 - 1947) Tuesday 2 August 1887 p 2

In 1916 her son Charles was temporarily granted exemption from WW1 service because he had his brother Ernest suffered from polio as child and was crippled, another (Eric) was an invalid and his youngest brother was 17, and he was the sole support of his mother.
On Sunday evening last, an accident befell Mr. Charles Anderson, of 'Ocean View,' Upper Crowns-street, which had immediately fatal insults.
Mr. Anderson had been for many years a resident, and was highly respected. An inquest was held on Monday by the Coroner, Mr. W. H. Rees. Evidence was given by Mrs. Margaret Anderson, widow of deceased, who deposed that during the day her husband had been in his usual health; at six o'clock he went out to feed the horse ; he returned to the kitchen, where the family were all assembled, and after being there for a few minutes went out again immediately afterwards a fall on the veranda was heard, and on coming out, witness found him lying down on the verandah insensible; he was brought into the room, where all present, together with his son-in-law (Mr. Williams), and neighbors, did what they could to restore animation, also telephoning for Dr. Lee ; deceased was 52 years of age and a native of Hamburg ; his family numbered six ; he had been 20 years resident in Wollongong. Ernest Williams, son-in-law of deceased, gave corroborative evidence. Dr. H. H. Lee deposed that he had made an examination and found that there was a mark on the back of the head and fracture of skull, which was the cause of death ; noticed that the verandah was slippy and that there was marks of a foot slipping. A verdict of accidental death was returned. The news gave a shock to the many friends of Mr, Anderson, and general sympathy is expressed for the family. One of the oldest, if not the oldest resident of Bulli and district, Mrs. Sidney Anderson, died on Wednesday night at her daughter's (Mrs. Martin Ward) residence, Bulli. The deceased who was born in Ireland, and came to Australia 68 years ago, was 91 years of age. When the late Mrs. Anderson and her husband arrived in Sydney they came straight to Wollongong and then by bullock wagon to Bulli. At that time there was only one house on the main road. Following her husband's death 35 years ago, Mrs. Anderson sold up the house and went to live with a daughter in Sydney. From here she returned to Bulli, and resided with Mrs. Ward ever since. She had been ailing for some years and in fact was an invalid for the past three years. There were ten children, three of whom Elizabeth (Mrs Madden), Margaret (Mrs. Pitt), and Tom, are deceased. The others are: Mary (Mrs. James Dean. Wollongong), Charlotte (Mrs. Harry Thompson, Fivedock), Florrie (Mrs M. Ward, Bulli), William (Broad meadow), Harry (Sydney); Jc and George (Bulli). There are 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. The funeral takes place this afternoon in St. Augustine's C. of E. grounds, alongside the remains of her husband. Husband was the Master of “Charles Webb” 1840-56 and commanded various schooners plying between Kiama, Wollongong and Sydney until superseded by steam.
Husband also listed as a farmer on Jane’s baptism record.
Roger Andrews, an unmarried man, who lived at Wanyambilli, was, on Tuesday afternoon, working with several Government surveyors who wore surveying coal lands out in the swamps about 2 or 3 miles beyond the Cordeaux River. He was felling a tree with an axe, and, thinking it was going to fall north, he went south,…. It was thought that some of the limbs of the tree had struck him on the back of the head, and as he seemed badly hurt a doctor was sent for. He lingered a little while, and then died from the effects of his injuries. The deceased was about 33 years of age. He was well known in the district about and beyond Mount Kembla and Cordeaux.
He was one of a family of 11, and the youngest of 6 sons. His mother died about two months ago. Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950) Thursday 13 July 1893 p 2

The Late Mrs Angel.
On Wednesday last a brave and worthy woman, full of years and virtues, was laid in the grave mid the tears and blessings of her sorrowing descendants, and the honour and respect of all who knew her during life.
We allude to Mrs Angel, of Lake Albert, an old and respected inhabitant of this neighbourhood. Mrs Angel was born near the Hawkesbury in 1812, and brought up in Illawarra. In 184o she settled near Hay with her husband, the late Henry Angel, the explorer, who, in company with Mr Hamilton Hume, explored Victoria , in 1824, and later on (in 1828) traversed the northern part of this colony, and found out the Macquarie, the Bogan, and the Darling (the third longest river in the world). In 1864 Mr Angel and family removed to the vicinity of Lake Albert, and acquired valuable landed property, on which his sons are now settled.
Mrs Angel brought up a large family; she was the mother of thirteen children, whom she lived to see branch out into ninety grand-children and forty great grand-children.
Forty-three of the former were present at her interment. Mrs Angel was a woman of strong and vigorous intellect and warm heart — the true type of a colonist — full of resources, industrious, careful, and liberal. She had an open hand to encourage struggling merit, and was a true friend and affectionate mother. She has left a large family of respected citizens amongst us, imbued with her principles, who will perpetuate her memory and transmit her virtues for generations. It is such colonists we require to build up our great Australian nation. Wagga Wagga Advertiser (NSW: 1875 - 1910) Saturday 4 October 1890 p 2

Yesterday an inquest was held at the Commercial Hotel, Elizabeth-street, before the City Coroner, on the body of Elizabeth Armstrong, found drowned on Wednesday last. George John Armstrong, husband of deceased, identified the body. Deceased was 49 years of age. She was not in the habit of drinking to excess, but he had seen her intoxicated upon one occasion. He had had no quarrel with deceased, or had she expressed an intention to make away with herself. Mrs. Regan, a daughter of deceased, said her mother was drinking last Tuesday evening. Witness had seen her drunk a dozen times in the last 12 months. Deceased had had no mental trouble.
Sarah Swadling, residing at Glebe Point, saw deceased on Tuesday evening about 7 o'clock sitting down in a paddock. She appeared to be drunk. John Yard, a slater, said he was at the jetty, Glebe Point, on Tuesday evening With a soldier named Hamlet Miller. They saw a woman walking in the mud to the left of the Point. She said in answer to a question as to whether she was gathering cockles ' No, am looking for water deep enough to drown myself in.' He and the soldier went then to a public house.
Hamlet Miller said he was so drunk that he didn't recollect anything that occurred on the Tuesday night. He found himself on Wednesday morning in a paddock at the Glebe. He believed he met Yard first at 8 o'clock on Wednesday morning. George Brown, Ferry-road, Balmain, said he heard screams on Tuesday night, about 9 o'clock, coming from the direction of the Glebe Rowing Club boathouse. He went to the beach, but could see nothing.
Next morning he found deceased floating in the water, at the foot of Forsyth-street. Drs. Harwood and Renwick proved that death was caused by drowning, and that there were no external marks of violence. Edward Newby, Lyndhurst-street, saw deceased and Yard in company about 7 o'clock on Tuesday evening. Deceased appeared drunk, but Yard was sober. They went in the direction of a paddock. Hamlet Miller was not with them. Edward M'Cabe gave similar evidence. Ellen Christie, Glebe Point, heard screams on Tuesday night between a quarter and half-past 3. The voice was a gruff one, and seemed partly smothered. The witness thought the words were 'Oh, murder,' and the sounds came from the direction of the shallow water. Witness heard only one voice. Norah Coney corroborated the evidence of the last witness- Sarah Jones, barmaid of the Ancient Briton Hotel, denied that Yard and the soldier Hamlet Miller, were in the house on Tuesday evening. The inquest was then adjourned until next Tuesday, to enable the police to obtain further evidence. The man Yard was taken into custody by direction of the Coroner. Mrs Armstrong.
The death of Mrs, Armstrong, which took place at Christ Church Parsonage about midnight on Wednesday last, will be a surprise to those who knew her, and especially so to some of the parishioners, whom she had visited not later than Friday last, when she was in the beat of spirits. To those who knew her intimately her lose will be keenly felt as parting from one of an ardent Christian temperament, and shrewd practical character. Mrs. Armstrong was the daughter of Dr. De Lenzy, of Carew, County Wicklow, Ireland, and widow of Captain Armstrong a military officer. She had lived for over 30 years at Christchurch, New Zealand, where some twenty two of her relatives are still residing.
For the last six years she had made her home with the Rev J. Chaffers-Welsh and family, to whose she we deeply attached, and where her loss will be very keenly felt. She had only recently returned from a visit to New Zealand with the intention of making Kiama her home, for which she had a great liking. Her illness, resulting from an attack of influenza, only lasted -five days, when she quietly passed to that higher spiritual home for which she had long been preparing. One of her last request was that there were to be no floral emblems on her decease, and especially that none were to be taken to the grave. She was 59 years of age at the time of her death. She leaves a brother, several sisters, and many relatives in New Zealand. The remains were taken yesterday afternoon from the Parsonage to the Church, followed by Mrs. Chaffer-Welsh and family, … The Kiama Independent, and Shoalhaven Advertiser (NSW : 1863 - 1947) Saturday 1 September 1894 p 2

Strapping Up a Husband.
In the Sydney Divorce Court on Friday, Florence Nightingale Armstrong sought a judicial separation from her husband, Thomas Francis Armstrong; on the grounds of drunkenness and cruelty.
The marriage took place at Marrickville in August 1885, according to the Wesleyan rites.
Petitioner, in her evidence, detailed acts of cruelty- On one occasion, in June 1905 respondent, came home drunk at midnight, and ordered his wife to get up and get him dinner. She refused, and he pulled her out of bed and struck her, knocking her down. Her son came into the room, and the respondent fought both of them, but eventually they got him down, and strapped his arms and legs. After a little time be became quieter, and they lifted him on to the bed. After he went to sleep, the straps -were taken off and when he awoke, he was quiet. In August last year respondent came home drunk at 11 o'clock at night, beat his wife and son, and the encounter ended In respondent being again strapped down. Respondent -was strapped down a third time in February of the present year after another outbreak of violence. On this occasion after he had been strapped, he begged to be released, but as soon as his bands were made free be began to fight again: so he was one more confined in the straps. He begged to be released, and promised to be “quiet. On this promise be was released. Then he went outside, and continued the petitioner, “he came back with a hammer in his band, and tried to strike my son on the head with It. “My son grappled with him again, and he fought both of us,” said the petitioner, “but we got him down again between the bathroom and the laundry, and strapped his arms and legs again. There was a couch in the bathroom. We lifted him on to it and watched him all night.'
In the morning be was quiet enough, but he said he would be even with us if he had to strangle us when “we were asleep.”
His Honor: What did you strap him with?
Petitioner; Portmanteau straps. We had to keep them ready.'

One of the best known and most highly esteemed residents of this part, of the district, Mrs Armstrong, sen., died yesterweek, at the residence of her son, Mr Gerard Armstrong, at the advanced age of 88 years. The deceased lady had resided in the Shoalhaven for nearly 45 years, and was a colonist of considerably over 60 years standing. The late Mrs Armstrong was a woman of noble characteristics, possessing in a marked degree those higher attributes of feminine virtue that distinguished many of the early settlers, and which in her case gained for her the goodwill and esteem of all who had the pleasure and privilege of her acquaintance. A worthy citizen herself, she brought up her family as became a ' Mother in Israel,' and as a result they have every reason to ' call her blessed.' The deceased's maiden name was Jane Irvine, and she was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland. She came to Sydney in the ship Crescent (Captain Golding)'in the latter end of the ' thirties.' She was married in Wollongong by the Rev. Parson Meares to the late Mr Robert Armstrong on the 28th August, 1841, and afterwards went with her husband to Kiama, their home for many years being Wesley Park in that district. On the 1st January, 1856, they came to the Shoalhaven, and here Mrs Armstrong resided till the time of her death, enjoying good health until quite recently, when advancing years told their tale on what was always a vigorous and robust constitution. The mortal remains were interred last Wednesday in the C.E. portion of the Nowra cemetery, the Rev. R. S. Willis, M.A. conducting, the funeral obsequies in the presence of a large gathering who had attended to pay their last tribute of respect to an honored colonist. She leaves four sons— Messrs John, William, Robert and Gerard— and four daughters—Mesdames T. Bishop, Z. Bice, S. Percival, and W. M'Lelland, all worthy residents of the district. OBITUARY
MRS. E. V. ASKEW.
Tile passing of Mrs. Elizabeth Victoria Askew, at the great age of 88 years, removes one of the oldest residents of Rossmore. The late Mrs. Askew passed away in a private hospital at Liverpool on January 13. She was the widow of the late Mr. Joseph Askew, who died nine months ago, also at the age of 88 years.
The family comprised Robert, Joseph and Albert (all deceased), and Mrs. Annie Lewis.
The late esteemed couple were very proud of their descendants, and had every reason to be, for in three families there were 28 children and 38 grandchildren Among the descendants well known to the district are Mr. Ern Askew (the genial storekeeper of Rossmore), Mrs. O Cowan (of Terminus Street, Liverpool) Mrs. V. McWhinnie and Miss M. Askew (Of Scott Street, Liverpool), Mrs. Ducket (of Rossmore, who so untiringly nursed the late lady in her ill health). Mr. Bill Askew and Messrs. Albert and Alex (of Sydney).
The late Mrs. Askew was born in England and came out to Australia with her husband over 58 years ago, settling at Wollongong. Mr. Askew retired about 27 years ago, when the family came to reside at Rossmore. Mr. Ern Askew and others of the clan have been Instrumental in pushing ahead most of the activities of the district, and the much loved and respected old couple always had a kindly interest in these doings.
The late Mrs. Askew was looking forward to her 89th birthday, which would have been In March.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, for Rookwood Crematorium, on Sunday, January 18.
Rev. Ronald Walker will conduct a memorial service to the late Mrs. Askew at All Saints' Church of England, Rossmore. Liverpool News (NSW: 1937 - 1941) Thursday 16 January 1941

CENTRAL CRIMINAL COURT.
Thursday.
Before His Honor the Chief Justice.
ABDUCTION.
Thomas Graves was indicted for that he, on the 25th October, 1847, took from her home one Clarinda Thomas, without the consent of .her parents, the said Clarinda Thomas being under the age of sixteen-to wit, the age of fourteen.
Mr. Holroyd defended the prisoner; Messrs. Nichols and Williams, attorneys.
William Thomas, sworn: Lived at Dapto, in the district of the Five Islands; had a daughter named Clarinda; she was fourteen years of age when he lost her about twelve months ago ; the prisoner came to his house on a Sunday in October, 1847. Witness was talking with prisoner, and told him he had promised his daughter and Caroline Waller (his wife's niece) a holiday, to go to see a friend at Jamberoo. Prisoner said he was going home the next day to Kiama; and that he (witness) had better let the girls go on that day. Witness said he had very little to do with it, and he had better ask his wife: the girls were going to a Mr. Brook's, at Jamberoo; the girls went with the prisoner; did not expect them home on any particular day. Prisoner asked witness to let the girls go to Kiama to see the place, and said if night should fall they might have the small room in the house he lodged in, and there they would be as secure as if they were in his (witness's) house; witness consented to this, and on the Monday morning the girls started with the prisoner. On the following Thursday witness sent his son to Mr. Brook's to bring the girls home ; ' they did not come home, as his son did not find either of them, and he never saw his daughter again till within about four months ago ; did not make any search for her ; could not read or identify the letter produced. When he again saw his daughter she came to his house; no one was with her; witness received her, and she had lived with him since ; he had never given the prisoner any leave to take his daughter away, to Sydney or to Wollongong, or to marry her ; he only gave him leave to accompany her on a holiday excursion ; -had five children besides Clarinda.
Cross-examined by Mr. Holroyd : Believed his daughter was born in 1833 ; would not swear it ; had known Graves four or five years ; he used to visit the house, and took his meals there, and sometimes slept there; did not known that prisoner kept company with his daughter ; if he did it was without his consent ; never saw any presents given by the prisoner to his daughter ; Caroline Waller lived in Sydney, in service ; she came to the house of witness and told him she had left her place, and stopped with him ; she had not been to his house since she went away with his daughter and the prisoner ; Clarinda had stopped voluntarily at home since she returned about four months ago.
John Thomas, sworn : Was son of the last witness ; remembered going to Jamberoo to look for his sister and cousin ; he expected to find them at Mr. Brook's ; they were not there ; witness then went to prisoner's place, but they were not there ; he then went to Wollongong, and on the road he overtook them with a cart ; witness said, ” It seems you're off;” prisoner said, “Yes, I'm going to Sydney ;” witness said his sister should not go to Sydney ; prisoner said he wanted her to go as company for Caroline Waller, whom he was going to marry ; witness refused, but on his begging and praying of him to allow her, he did so ; was sent by his father to look after the girls ; did not see his father from the time he left home till he met prisoner at Wollongong ; had no authority from him to let his sister go to Sydney saw them start in the steamer from Wollongong. Prisoner said they would return from Sydney on Sunday, and that he (witness) was to come and meet them. Did not see any more of them then, but on Sunday morning when he went to meet them they had not come.
Cross-examined: When the conversation took place between him and the prisoner, his sister and Caroline Waller were present. They might probably have heard the conversation ; they were not more than three or four yards off; know what “keeping company” meant ; was too young to keep company with any young lady yet ; never knew the prisoner was keeping company with Clarinda; prisoner never spoke to him about it, or offered him any presents to speak in his favour to his father, or mother; nevcr received any presents from the prisoner, nor knew that his sister did, except a pair of shoes, for which many little services were rendered.
Caroline Waller, sworn: Was the niece of the wife of William Thomas; remembered stopping at the house of her aunt about a year ago, and leaving to go to Jamberoo with Clarinda Thomas; they were going to Mr. Brook's, at Jamberoo; the prisoner was with them ; they were to call at Mr. Brook's, and then at the prisoner's ; they did not go to Brook's. They left Thomas's about seven o'clock in the morning ; they went at night to the house of the prisoner at Kiama, and stayed there till Thursday ; the prisoner and Clarinda Thomas having decided on being married, they did not like to call at Brook's ; the match was made up on Wednesday, and they resolved to come up to Sydney to get married ; witness wanted Clarinda to go home, and told prisoner she was too young to be married ; prisoner said he did not think her too young ; witness did not get anything from prisoner for accompanying them; remembered John Thomas meeting them at Wollongong ; did not hear the conversation which took place between bim and the prisoner; when the boy came up to the cart he asked his sister where she was going ; witness said she was going to Sydney, and the boy said she should not ; did not know what conversation took place afterwards between the boy and prisoner; the prisoner afterwards told the boy they were to return on Saturday when they carno to Sydney they went to a house in King-street, next door to Roche's Hotel ; they arrived there on Friday, and staid till the following Tuesday ; on Wednesday they returned to Wollongong, and went to Grave's house; witness wanted Clarinda to go home, but she refused to do so ; remembered prisoner's getting a letter written to her uncle ; on Monday they went to a church on Church-hill, and tho prisoner and Clarinda Thomas were married ; it was about four o'clock in the afternoon ; the prisoner used to attend a Methodist chapel, and Clarinda too ; when they went to church the clergyman asked them if her father and mother were willing ; the prisoner and Clarinda answered that they were ; the clergyman asked what age Clarinda was ; Graves and Clarinda answered, but witness did not know what answer they made.
Cross-examined : When young Thomas met them near Wollongong, witness and Clarinda were in the cart ; Graves was sitting on the side of the cart ; he got down to talk to Thomas ; did not hear Graves say that he wanted Clarinda to go to Sydney as company for her (witness), as he was going to marry Caroline Waller ; was engaged to be married at that time, but no arrangement was made that both marriages should take place at the same time ; a person of the name of Bond went with them to the church to get married.
Rev. William Ritchie: Was clergyman of the Scots Church, Church-hill; belonged to the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland; had no connexion with the church in the colony, and was under no church authority in the colony; did not, remember the prisoner's coming to his church.
It was here objected by Mr. Holroyd and ruled by His Honor that the proof of the marriage was irrelevant to the issue.
This was the case for the Crown.
Mr. Holroyd objected, that the girl was not taken from her father, as she had been given by him into the possession of the prisoner, and there was no evidence, that at the time he “received her into his possession he had any contemplation of taking her away to marry her. '
The objection was over-ruled, and Mr. Holroyd briefly addressed the Jury to show that there was no criminal intent on the part of the prisoner, and that there was no evidence as to the age of the girl.
His Honor was proceeding to sum up, but the Jury having declared they had made up their minds, the prisoner was acquitted and discharged. The Sydney Morning Herald 3 November 1848
Clorinda Thomas was the daughter of pioneers William and Sarah Thomas, who came out from England to work for Henry Osborne. The Thomas' were notable land holders in the Village and Dunmore. MRS. CATHERINE ATKINSON. 88 YEARS. The death took place on Friday evening last of Mrs. Catherine Atkinson at her residence, “Fernleigh,” Kiama, in her 89th year. She was the relict of the late Mr. Thomas Atkinson who for many years was an Alderman of Kiama…Before her marriage Mrs. Atkinson was Miss Catherine Prott, and a member of a well-known district family. She, with her husband, were held in very high esteem, and “Fernleigh' her home, was built and for a number of years an up-to late guest house by herself and daughters, and unfortunately the illness of her daughter, the late Miss M. Atkinson following that, which she herself experienced, curtailed its usefulness in the district as its business had to be relinquished. Despite her great age, until a year or so ago Mrs. Atkinson retained her wonderful memory and was most interesting to talk to in her remembrance of earlier days, for she came to Kiama as a little, girl of seven. The late Mrs. Atkinson reared a family of two sons, Messrs. George and Thomas Atkinson, and seven daughters, five of whom were married in the late Mrs. Milne (Annie), Mrs. Johnston (Kate), Mrs. Kendall (Daisy), Mrs. R. Angus (Florrie), Mrs. Christie (Ethel), Miss Minnie (deceased) and Lily. During her ill health the late Mrs. Atkin son was devotedly cared for by members of her family. She, with them, in the past, has given fine citizenship, for when health and strength permitted much assistance was given to town projects fair charity and progress, they being musically a talented family. Mrs. Atkinson was a women of fine presence, happy natured and very hospitable and a true friend in sickness or trouble. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon at 2.30 p.m. the interment at the North Kiama cemetery. The Kiama Reporter and Illawarra Journal (NSW: 1899 - 1947) Wednesday 13 June 1934 p 2

The death took place, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Richard Henderson, Minnamurra Street, Kiama, of Mrs. Ann Eliza Axford, in her 83rd year, relict of Mr. Joel Axford.
