She was a relation of the poet, Aubrey de Vere. She was educated by English and German governesses and had trained as a nurse in London.

Mrs Mannington Caffyn used her nursing training to support her husband's professional standing; she was a founder of the District Nursing Society in Victoria and served on its committee for about two years, a keen advocate of lifting nursing from the 'sphere of Sarah Gampism into a scientific profession for educated gentlewomen'. In the literary field she was to eclipse her husband and achieve fame in her own right as a novelist. She wrote her novels as Kathleen Caffyn, Mrs Mannington Caffyn, but mostly as 'Iota'; she also contributed to the local press. Her sixty-page 'Victims of Circe — a Victorian Station Story with Melbourne and Tasmanian Associations' was published in Mrs Patchett Martin's Cooee: Tales of Australian Life by Australian Ladies in 1891. She also contributed to By Creek and Gully, edited by Lala Fisher in 1899. Of Iota's seventeen novels only A Comedy in Spasms (1895) and Dorinda and Her Daughter (1910) have any connexion with Australia; the only one written in Australia was her first, The Yellow Aster (London, 1894). It had four editions in a month and was widely reviewed as a 'book of the day'. The St James's Budget found it a 'peculiar' book, both 'Zolaesque' and betraying the influence of Ibsen, a product of 'morbid sentimental self-consciousness'. It is the story of a girl deliberately brought up without knowledge of the Christian religion, 'her powers of mind … highly cultivated but her heart starved'. She marries a rich and handsome gentleman believing herself 'sexless' and proving to be completely cold to her duties as a wife. Love floods into her heart only as her child is born. Reviewers condemned Iota's details on the approach of the infant as more suited to the pages of a doctor's book than those of a novel likely to fall into the hands of 'young and old, man, woman, and child'. To the Australasian it was 'vigorous writing, its faults being rawness of style (in places), a certain extravagance of description and obtrusion of incident, which might have been toned down or left out—the faults of a first attempt and bold ambition'.

From the first Kathleen Mannington Caffyn enjoyed outstanding success for her fiction. One reason for her popularity was that, despite an intricate verbose style and often obscure plots which dealt with art, religion, science and philosophy, her novels were essentially romantic with strong feminine appeal. Generally their themes were the analyses of women in their relations with men and were overlaid with associations of sex which were more significant than their ostensibly central plots. A second reason for her success was that she was undoubtedly skilled in character portrayal, a quality she shared with her husband. The decline of her popularity has been due as much to the changing conventions in novels on romantic love as to her own literary weaknesses.

In 1892 the Caffyns returned to London. Stephen died from phthisis on 2 October 1896 at Bethnal House Asylum. After his death Kathleen wrote most of her novels, the last, Merry Mirrilies, appearing in 1916. Though she ceased to write, she still pursued her other interests of hunting and polo. She died aged 73 after an operation in a nursing home at Turin, Italy, on 6 February 1926, survived by a son.

Our London correspondent announces the death of Mrs. Kathleen Mannington Caffyn, who, under the pen name of “Iota,” was the author of “A Yellow Aster,” which volume appeared in 1894, and subsequently of about a dozen other works of fiction. Mrs. Caffyn, who was a native of County Tipperary, was the daughter of William de Vere Hunt and Louisa Going, and married the late Stephen Mannington Caffyn, surveyor, writer and inventor. The death occurred at Kiama yesterday of Mrs. J. H. Caird, mother of Mrs. M. F. Bruxner, wife of the Deputy-Premier and Minister for Transport, Mrs. Caird, who was aged 83 years, had been a resident of Kiama for 68 years.

“All sections of, the community were deeply sad, to learn of the passing of one of the oldest residents of the district on Wednesday morning in the person of Mrs Sarah Elizabethll Caird, of Hartwell Kiama. She had inherited the estate from the late Thomas Chapman, from whom Chapman's Point got its name, and who came out from England to Australia in the fifties of the last century. Except for a few years spent at Braidwood, Mrs. Caird had spent the whole of her long life at Hartwell, a charming hostess of the historic mansion with its old world atmosphere.

The late Mrs. Caird endeared herself to everyone with whom she came in contact during her long life, and she retained her youthful charm and nature to the end. To those who had only had the privilege of knowling her during the past decade. It was hard to realise that she had well passed the allotted span, so alert she was, interested and interesting. Edward Davis, an aboriginal, who was remanded the previous Monday on a charge of assaulting an aboriginal woman named Eily Campbell with intent to commit rape, at Port Kembla. on 23^rd February, again appeared before the bench…

Accused, who pleaded not guiltv. Was defended by Mr. A. Lysaght.

From the evidence it appears that accused went to Campbell's hut on the day mentioned, and was in the ace of getting something to eat when Mrs. Campbell arrived on the scene. On going into the bedroom, where accused was, Mrs. Camp bell stated that Davis attempted to assault her.

A Peculiar Case
Believed Him Dead

In the Divorce Court to-day before Mr. Justice G. B. Simpson, Eliza Bertha Milne (formerly Sampson), sought divorce from John David Milne on the ground of desertion. They were married, she said, at Yass, where Milne was a storekeeper. In July, 1883, according to the rites of the Church of England. They subsequently came to Sydney, and in March, 1889; respondent obtained employment, which took him to Kiama. In connection with the winding -up of an insolvent estate. She remained with his mother at Balmain until the end of July, when she went to stay with her aunt. She corresponded with her husband, but he ceased to write to her after August, 1889. She afterwards went to Yass, and remained there about nine months. While in Yass she heard that her husband had gone to West Australia. She returned to his mother's place at Balmain, and sometime later she was, shown a letter, as a consequence of which she went into mourning. His mother and sister also went into mourning. The letter she referred to announced the death of her husband, And she believed him to be dead. She heard nothing about him after that, and had no reason to believe him to be living went through the form of marriage with another gentleman, but they separated two months later, when she learned that the respondent, was alive. She subsequently instituted proceedings in divorce, and efforts were made to serve him in West Australia, but without success.

His Honor found in favour of the petitioner, holding that the fact of her having married again did not, under the circumstances, debar her from obtaining a divorce. MR . J. D. RANKIN. J.P.

On Sunday Mr. J. E Rankin, J.P., who only, took possession of the Dapto Hotel about a fortnight ago, died very suddenly about noon. Deceased was a middle- aged man and had been married about six months. On Wednesday the Coroner (Mr. O. C. Russell) held an inquiry at the hotel, and a verdict was returned that deceased died of valvular disease of the heart. The deceased only left Camden a fortnight ago. He took the deepest interest in local public movements, and had occupied the position, of Mayor. He was one of the founders of the Abbotsford Masonic Lodge, being past master;   also chief ranger of the Royal Order of Foresters, a committeeman of the School of Arts, the Cottage Hospital, and the agricultural, rendering valuable service to the latter as steward. MRS. D. M. CAMPBELL
MUSWELLBROOK, Wednesday.

A link with past days in the Bathurst district was severed last week by the death of Mrs. D. M. Campbell, aged 80 years. Mrs. Campbell was the eldest daughter of Mr. R. H. Blunden, who, a century ago, accompanied his father—a life-long friend and fellow-Wykenhamist of John Blaxland, brother of Gregory, the explorer—from England, and purchased the pastoral property known as Nubrygan, in the Wellington district, from Captain Finch, one of the early military officers stationed in the colony. In 1876 Miss Blunden was married to Donald McDonald Campbell, of Argyll, who died in 1910. The elder son, Harry, was killed in action at Villers Bretonneux. Mrs. Charlie Campbell, who was reported in last issue as being seriously ill, was conveyed to the District Hospital on Sunday 1st, but, although all skill and attention was given, it was of no avail: she passed away on Monday, 2nd. She left many relatives and friends to mourn for her sad loss, she having been a lifelong resident in Balgownie and born on Mt. Keira. Of a sociable disposition, she made many and lasting friendships in the district. Her funeral on ihe Tuesday was a very large and representative one. James Moore died from phythsis and haemoptysis. Following James Moore’s death in 1856 Maria married Thomas Campbell at Jamberoo on 28 September 1858.

Thomas was a farmer, who it is believed inherited “Range Farm”, Jamberoo from his father. Maria and Thomas had one daughter, Laura Alice Jane, born at Kiama in 1858 (Cert. No 8024). Laura was not mentioned on her father’s death certificate, and was aged 31 years on her mother’s death certificate.

Maria Campbell continued to rear cattle on the farm at Jamberoo and on two occasions in 1860 and 1861 was mentioned in court relating to incidents with a neighbour, James Gay. In both incidents Maria stated that during her husband’s life he was in occupation of the land, and since his death it had remained in her possession and had her cattle on it.

Maria Campbell left Jamberoo about 1863 and moved to Sydney to be near her daughter, Laura.

On Sunday morning, at Kurri District Hospital. Sarah, wife of Mr. Charles Cannon, of Forest Lodge, Sydney, passed away, having succumbed to an attack of peritonitis.

Deceased was on a visit to her daughter. Mrs. William Creighton, and was taken suddenly ill. Another daughter and a son reside in Kurri. There are five other sons still living. Mrs. Elizabeth Cantwell

A sufferer from indifferent health for some time and an inmate of the hospital for the past three weeks, the death occurred in the institution last night of Mrs. Elizabeth Susan Cantwell at the age of 61.

The deceased was a native of; Binda, later living at Kurri Kurri until coming to Lithgow over 13 years ago. During that time she made many, friends and will be particularly missed by her numerous friends in the St. Paul's Church of England, of which she had been a staunch supporter.

The circumstances are the more sad by reason of the fact that Mr. Cantwell is an inmate of the hospital.

Deceased is survived by her husband.Mr. Patrick John Cantwell, two sons, James Thomas and John Kenneth, , and one daughter, Mrs. , E. J.Hiles; all four being residents of Spooner-steet, Lithgow. At the Bulli Police Court on Saturday, before Lieut-col. Chisholm, P.M. Alfred George Capon and Eliza Jane Capon were charged with a breach of the 5th section of the Children's Protection Act- to wit, that they did, on a certain day in November last, wilfully ill-treat a certain child, named Alfred Stephenson, such treatment resulting in bodily suffering to such child.

Inspector Howard prosecuted on be half of the State Children's Department, for whom Mr. Russell appeared, Mr. Lysaght appearing for defendants.

The child; an illegitimate one, had been handed over to the custody of the defendants about fifteen months ago, by its mother, under the provisions of the Children's Protection Act, andshe was to pay them a weekly sum towards its support. The mother had neglected to make any payments for a considerable time, and her whereabouts was not known.

Inspector Howard deposed that, in company with Constable Dimond, he had visited the residence of defendants and examined the child whose body was covered with vermin; the state of the premises was also filthy in the extreme.

Mrs. Henness, a neighbor of defendants, deposed that the child was a cleanly condition except when; it was being taken out by its foster-parents; it was nearly always allowed to run about in a half-naked state, and was very often locked up in the house alone, when its screams could be heard a considerable distance a way she had frequently seen it beaten by defendants, and on one particular occasion when the child had excreted on the kitchen floor, she saw the male defendant seize it by the nape of the neck, and forcibly rub its face in the excrement, afterwards either knocking or pushing it so that it fell from the verandah into the yard.

Mrs. Presgrave, who appeared in court in the garb of a nurse, corroborated the evidence of the previous witness, and deposed to other Instances of ill-treatment, as did also Mr. Coulson and Mrs. Tressider. It was stated that the female defendant had been seen sticking some thing into the child, which caused it to scream, and that she had frequently slapped it and knocked it off the verandah. .

At the conclusion of the evidence, the P.M. commented in severe terms on the conduct of defendants, and sentenced the male to pay a fine of £10, with £4 4s professional costs, £3 10s for witnesses, and 8s 6d costs of court, levy and distress; in default, one month's, hard labor in Wollongong gaol. The female defendant was fined £5, with 8s 6d costs of court, levy and distress. The male defendant having confessed to having no goods upon which to levy was removed in custody.

The Bench ordered that the child — a bright, intelligent little fellow three and a half years old— be handed over to Inspector Howard, with a view of his being placed in one of the children's departments under State control,

An old and very highly respected resident of the Upper Manning, in the person of Mrs. Thomas Carey, passed away at her home. Cedar Party at 9 o'clock on Tuesday morning. The late Mrs. Carey had reached the ripe age of 89 years and 7 months. She was a native of Wiltshire, England, and was born on 4th July, 1839. LATE MRS. THOMAS CAREY.

Brief reference has been made to the death of Mrs. Thomas Carey, which ocurred at her home, Cedar Party, near Wingham.

The late Mrs. Carey was born in Wiltshire, England, in 1837. She left for Australia with her late husband,

Mr. Thomas Carey, in 1860. Mrs. Carey was married at the age of 19 years. The trip was made in the sailing ship Canada West. A very trying time was experienced by the passengors on this ship, the vessel being 'becalmed' near the Equator for three weeks. Soon after landing in Sydney, Mrs, Carey and her husband proceeded to Wollongong, where they started hotelkeeping- taking over thoe Brighton Hotel. After 12 years Mr. Carey was compelled to relinquish the business, owing to ill-health. They, then decilded to come to the North Coast, and settled at Wlngham. , Hero they took over the Wlngham Hotel. Six months later they deciede to settle on the land, and accordingly went farming on the Wontworth Estate near Wlngham, a calling which they followed for many years with success.

The late Mrs. Carey, with her late husband, ranked amongst the first pioneers to some on the the Manning….

Mrs. Lillian Carmody.

The death occurred on Sunday, May 26, of Mrs. Lillian Carmody, at her residence, 133 Denison-street, Waverley, after a long and painful illness, from which she had practically recovered when pneumonia and pleurisy supervened, taking her to her early grave. The late Mrs. Carmody was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Bayliss, of Moore Park. Her life was spent in her domestic duties, while she loved to carry on the work of silent charity.

Many men and women scattered in the various walks of life have had their memories of sad days made brighter by the recollection of kindly words and deeds of that gentle lady who has now gone to her eternal reward. In her last illness, rs. Carmody was attended by the Rev. Father Kennedy, at Holy Cross Church, Bondi Junction, who administered the last Sacraments to her. The Little Sisters of the Poor, Randwick, and the Sisters of Mercy, Bondi Junction, and members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Lakemba and Waverley, visited her home before and after her death, and recited the Rosary for the repose of her soul. Requiem Mass' was celebrated by the Rev. Father Kennedy at Holy Cross Church, on Tuesday, May 28. The blessing of the body and the prayers for the departed soul were recited in the home by Rev. Father Kennedy before the funeral left for the Catholic Cemetery, Rookwood Rev. Father Murphy officiated at the graveside amid a large concourse of relatives and friends. In August 1865, a prisoner named Jane Carroll, “a notorious character in the district” who had been frequently incarcerated in Wollongong Jail, balanced two night tubs on top of a stool near the wooden fence which encloses a portion of the exercise yard.

Having got on top of them, she put her toe in a small crack in the fence.

“In another minute or two she would, no doubt, have been over the fence, but being fortunately perceived by the jailer and one of the females who was in the kitchen her attempted escape was frustrated.”

POLICE COURT.-At the instance of the. Honorable the Attorney-General, Susan Carter was summoned before this Bench on a charge of having concealed the birth of a child by secretly putting into a box the dead body of the said child. The case had been previously gone into before the coroner, but the papers were returned to the Bench for a fuller enquiry. The   following is the evidence taken before Messrs. Robb  and Hindmarsh :-George Young being duly sworn saith : I am a senior constable in the Police Force of   New South Wales, and am stationed at Kiama ; on Wednesday, the 15th June last, Robert Bryen of   Omega Retreat, Gerringong, reported to me that there was a child found dead in a box under a bed in a room,in his house ; he said the child belonged to one of his  servant girls ; I immediately reported the matter to the coroner ; an inquest was held on the body by   Mr. Fry the coroner ; I saw a girl named Susan  Carter in the house, I asked her if the child was hers, and she said it was. Robert Bryen, being duly sworn, saith: I live at Omega Retreat, Gerringong ; I am a farmer ; my wife called me before I went into the  yard; on tbe morning of, I think, the 16th of June last, to see what was in Susan Carter's room ; I went into the girl's room, and I saw a dead child ; Susan Carter is my servant girl ¡ my wife rolled up the dead child in a cloth, and put it into the box under the bed where she first found it ; Susan Carter was not in the room at the time ; she was in the stockyard ; I did not tax Susan Carter with being the mother of the child, but I went and milked ; when I was finished milking I reported the matter to senior constable Young ; there is only one room between where I and my wife sleep and the room where Susan Carter sleeps ; I heard no noise during the night ; she was sick to the best of my knowledge about the 15th of June last ; it was at night time ; she got out of her bed during the night and went to the fire  in the kitchen; the kitchen might be  about six or seven yards or better from her bedroom ; the child was a newly born infant, about a day old, I suppose ; there did not appear to be any marks of violence upon it; it appeared to have been born a healthy child. Eliza Bryen, being duly sworn, said I am the wife of Robert Bryen, and live at Omega Retreat, Gerringong on Wednesday morn- ing, I think, the 16th June last, one of my servant   girls; Jane M'Canney, called me to her bedroom ; she asked me to look at a box under the bed and see what was in it. I asked her to look ; she said she would not I looked myself ; I found a bundle and I opened   it, and found a dead baby ; I went back to my own bedroom and I called my husband out to see the baby ; I put it back into the box again, and went to the yard and milked ; my husband, when he saw the dead baby, said he would report it to the police ; he did do so ; I asked Susan Carter what she would do with the baby in the box ; she said she would bury it that night ; she did not deny that the child was hers ; I did not notice any marks of violence about the body ; I did not ask Susan Carter whether the child was hers , I had a suspicion it was hers ; before the baby was born she denied most positively that she was in the family way ; afterwards she admitted it ; I don't know whether the   child was born alive, it looked to be a fine little baby ; Jane M'Canney slept in the same bed with Carter, Jane M'Canney, being duly sworn, said : I am in the service of Robert Bryen, who resides at Omega Retreat, Gerringong ; I know Susan Carter before the Court, we were both servants in Mr, Bryen's family during the month of June last ; we slept in the same room and in the same bed ; I recollect Susan Carter being ill on a Sunday night about a month ago, I cannot recollect the day of the month ; I recollect an inquest being held before Mr. Fry, the coroner ; I gave evidence at the inquest about the birth of Susan Carter's child ; it was nearly a week before the inquest that Susan Carter was sick ; I did not render any assistance in giving birth to the child ; on Tuesday she was sick all night, she got no sleep ; she did not communicate with me, but I suspected she was in the family way ; on Wednesday morning she got out of bed before I did ; she dressed herself; the bed was not soiled ; it was dawn ; she told me to rise, I did so, and I left the room, but Carter did not follow me ; I was absent about a quarter of an hour ; when I went back she was sitting on a chair, near the bed, with a bundle in her hands ; I did not know what was in the bundle ; I left again and she followed me ; and we both went and fetched in the cows to milk; she stopped to milk, and I came back to our bedroom again to see what was in the bundle ; I found the bundle in a box under the bed ; I pulled the box out but did not open the bundle ; I went for Mrs. Bryen ; she came and lifted up the bundle and asked me to open it; I refused; Mrs. Bryen opened it, and we both saw a baby ; the baby was white, and appeared to have arrived at maturity before birth ; it was a nice looking baby, and had no marks of violence on it. Mary Lees, being duly sworn, saith : I live at Gerringong ; I know Susan Carter now before the Court ; I was called on, I think, the 16th of June, by Mr. Bryen and Mr. Young to deliver Susan Carter, of a birth ; I went to Mr. Bryen's house and I saw Carter on the sofa in the kitchen ; she was very sick ; it was about eight o'clock at night ; I then delivered her of the after birth ; I examined the child I found the baby the same as other babies it was a beautiful baby; I never handled a nicer baby : I am a nurse and midwife I have been so for twenty-six years ; I have more experience as a midwife than any other person in this district ; I did not know anything about the birth of Carter's child till I was sent for on the 16th;   when I first saw the baby it was in a box, and under the bed in the bedroom ; I don't know whether it was Carter's bedroom ; I have been in Bryen's house before ; Carter is not a married woman ; she is about nineteen years of age ; Bryen's house is a wooden one the wall which divides Mrs. Bryen's room and the servants room is made of paper and calico, and any noise or crying could be heard throughout either room the baby was dead, and I believe it was born so. The depositions having been read over to Carter, the Bench asked her in the usual form if she had any thing to say ; she replied that she had not. She was then committed to take her trial at the next Quarter Sessions to be holden at Wollongong, on the 16th September. Bail allowed. Referred to as Mrs Thomas Caseley in the Sydney Morning Herald article in 1902 on the Mt Kembla mine disaster (see Charlotte Hobbs) she was helping to lay out the bodies. It is it is more likely to be Jane Johns, rather than her daughter-in-law Mary Elizabeth Walker, as she was 36 when the Bulli Mine Disaster occurred in 1887 while Mary Elizabeth Walker was a teenager. As an older woman she would have been more likely to lay out deceased people.

Mrs. Elizabeth Castles, of 15 Ellen Street, Wollongong, passed away at her home, on Tuesday morning at the, age of 86 years. The late Mrs. Castles was a well known Wollongong resident and was held in high esteem by the many who knew her. Harriet’s grandson was supporting Albert and Harriet when he was killed in the Bulli Mine Disaster in 1887. He is reported as Cecil Cavill in the newspapers, but his birth and death are recorded as Cecil H Randal Knight. He was born 1872 in Sydney. He was the illigitmate son of their eldest daughter Cecillia Cavill, who separated from her husband Thomas Knight early in the marriage.

Profound regret was expressed here on Tuesday afternoon, when the death was announced of Mrs; Albert Cavill, of Campbell street, Woonona.

Mr Cavill had returned home from his work and on going to the bathroom to hang up his working coat, found his wife dead in the bath. Deceased, who was 46 year of age, was in her usual state of health when her husband left for his work that morning, and the great shock he received may be better imagined than described. She was a sister to Mrs. Bert Wynn, of Corrimal, and was held in the highest esteem. There is a family of one son and one daughter left to mourn the loss of a devoted mother. Death of Mrs. Cawdell. — -As announced in our issue of Wednesday, Mrs. Annie Cawdell, relict of the late Rev. J. A. Cawdell, passed away, rather unexpectedly at her late residence, Cook and Bank streets, early on Friday morning. Since last Easter she had suffered intermittently from asthma; and a few days before her death she had a bad attack, which had a very injurious effect upon the heart. Dr. Whiting, of Parramatta, was with her only a few hours before the fatal symptoms set in, and an urgent call was sent to Dr. Furnival, but when he arrived the patient was beyond human aid, and she died In the presence of her only son and daughter at 3 o'clock. Her late much revered husband predeceased her by only nine months. She was born at Cowes, in the Isle of Wight, almost within sight of the Royal Palace, and married in India at the age of 16 years. At the time of her death she was 52 years of age. With her husband she left India for New Zealand, where they stayed just a year and then came to Now South Wales. They were at Albion Park, on the South Coast, for a short while, and then removed to Lidcombe, where they resided about 18 years, during the whole of which time she acted in the capacity of organist at St. Stephen's Church, and in other ways actively assisted her husband in the work of the parish.

After his death she continued as organist, a position she filled until within a short period of her death. She was beloved by all who camo in contact with her, and the news of her death came as a shock to her wide circle of friends and acquaintance, as well as the general community. She leaves to mourn their severe loss a son (Mr. W. A. H. Cawdell) and daughter (Miss E. Cawdell), with whom there is widespread sympathy in their sad bereave ment. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, and the large gathering at the obsequies testified to the great respect in which the deceased lady had been held. There died at St. Vincent's Hospital, on March 24, one of the oldest Catholics of the Richmond, Mrs. Jane Cawley, of Keerrong. Had she lived till August 18, she would have been 90 years of age. The late Mrs. Cawley retained her senses to the last, and was most reconciled to her approaching end. She belonged to one of the best known Catholic families of the North Coast.

She was born in Kiama, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Geraghty. Mrs. Cawley belonged to a remarkably long lived family. Her father and her mother (a native, by the way, of Parramatta), both passed over 90 years, and their large family of 16 children have nearly all achieved over 80 years. Mrs. Cawley was married in 1860, to Michael Cawley, two others of her family also being married to members of the Cawley family. The late Mrs. Cawley lived at Bellambi till 1911, when she came to reside with her son, Mr. John Cawley, of Keerrong. Her husband pre-deceased her by 33 years. She is survived by eight of the nine children of her family. They are John and George, of Keerrong, and Michael, of Sydney; Mrs. L. D'Arcy, of Sydney; Mrs. J. P. Madden, of Wollongong; Mrs. P. Oxman, of Bellambi; Mrs. P. McGuigan, of Kyogle. Her grand-children number 24, and her great-grand-children 14. One of her brothers and four of her sisters also survive her. Through- out her life, Mrs. Cawley was a most devoted Catholic, rearing her family to love and serve God in the Catholic faith. She was a lady of a very keen mind, and most generous heart, and exercised a remarkable influence in the wide circle of her friends and relatives.

Mrs. Helen Challenor died suddenly at her residence, Collaery Road, : Russell Vale, on Dec. 27th. She was conversing with a friend at the front gate and suddenly collapsed. The late Mrs. Challenor was well and favorably known throughout the district. She was formerly Miss Crompton and had resided in the district practically all her life. Bridget Chapman, wife of the plaintiff, said: She had been hired together with the rest of the family on the 21st January, and been ordinarily employed at milking and in the dairy. Had continued so till Thursday, 31st March. On that day her husband had told her there was to be no more work for them. She understood this to be in consequence of a quarrel which had taken place between her daughter and Mrs. Hindmarsh. Her daughter, who had engaged as general house servant, had been turned out of the house by Mr. H. Some dispute had arisen, she believed about washing. Mr. H. had taken her daughter by the neck, and pushed her out of doors, slamming the door behind her. Witness saw this. Her husband went up to the house to see what was the matter. Mr. H. said, “There, take your daughter, or I shall kick her home.” Her daughter had just before been down to tell her father what Mr. H. had done. Her daughter went into her room and requested permission to wash it out, which was refused.

Witness had had no disagreement with Mrs. H., and had never said “That as they were always wrangling, it would be best to part:” Defendant again put some questions as to the reason why plaintiff and his family had left Mr. Thompson's service.

The question was objected to by Mr. Owen, and was not answered.

Maria Chapman, daughter of the plaintiff, said she had been married, but her husband had left her. She was in the habit of going by her maiden name. She did not know whether her husband was dead of alive. Witness was about 19, and had been married about three years since.

It was about two years ago that her husband left her. He was about 63 years old. (This last piece of information was volunteered by witness.) Witness had entere Mr. Hindmarsh's service with her father and mother, amd did the housework. (A specimen of the bread supplied to them by Mr. H., or made from the flour he supplied; was here exhibited to the court.)

Witness had been turned out by Mr. Hindmarsh who slammed the door after her. Mrs. H. had accused witness of burning her dishcloths to light the fire, which witness had denied. It was during this altercation that Mr. H. interposed and turned witness out. She went into the room to get her clotihes, &c. Mr. H. had said she would hardly know her own property. She requested permission to wash out her room, but Mrs. H. had refused.

In answer to questions by defendant, witness said her name was Molloy. She denied having ever taken anything from the house. She was not going out when pushed by defendant. -Defendant then asked a question about her having been in the habit of opening a certain watch in the house. Questition objected to by Mr. Owen.

CAPTAIN C. F. G. CHAPMAN

Captain Claud F. G. Chapman (65), late of the 6th Inniskillon Dragoons, and a well-known resident of Leura, died at his home, 'Corwon', Megalong Street, on Monday.

After a short service in St. Alban's Church, the body was interred in the Church of England portion of Wentworth Falls Cemetery on Tuesdayafternoon. Rev. G. S. Richmond officiating.

Deceased.was born at Curragh, in the North of Ireland, in 1861, and was the son of a Colonel in the Inniskillon Dragoons. He was educated at Eton and Cambridge, and thence passed to Sandhurst. After leaving the military college he joined the 6th Inniskillon Dragoons, and saw service in India, and South Africa during the Zulu War. He first visited Australia as aide-de-camp to Sir Henry Norman, Governor of Queensland, and it was in the Northern State that he met the lady who became his wife. He returned to Africa during the Boer War, where he fought with his old regiment, and, when peace was restored, he returned to Australia. From Queensland he came to N.S.W., and made his home at Leura.

He was highly respected by all townspeople; his attractive and genial personality winning him many friends. Though not, over-strong, and in failing health, he was a well-known figure at Leura golf links.

As a student at Eton, he wielded a good bat, and represented his school in inter-college matches. Later, he played for Gloucestershire in the time of the great 'W.G.'

Deceased leaves a wife and daughter, as well as a large number of sorrowing friends, to mourn his loss. The Blue Mountain Echo (NSW : 1909 - 1928) Friday 16 July 1926 p 5
