LATE Mrs. JACKMAN
The death of Mrs. Jemima Victoria Jackman, wife of Mr. Thomas Henry Jackman, of Robertson Street, Coniston, was the subject of an inquest conducted by the deputy-Coroner, Mr S. R. Musgrave. on Saturday.
He found that death was due to concussion and cerebral haemorage following an accidental fall at her home on the evening of May 31.

Dr. Goldie gave evidence of the cause of death and said there was a mark on her temple and over the right eye which indicated that she' had fallen on her face.

SARAH TORRENS v ALEXANDER TORRENS
The latter was charged with violently and maliciously threatening his wife on the 20th March last, and pleaded not guilty.
Mrs Ryan appeared for complainant and Mr. Butler for defendant.
Sarah Torrens, duly sworn, deposed that she was separated from her husband. Between 8 and 9 29th of last month, she heard someone outside her house, and sent Miss Booth into the yard to see who it was. She heard Miss Booth speak to defendant, who jumped a fence and went around to the front gate. Witness went to the door and told him to go home, when he used the words complained of. Witness then got some water in a dipper and threw it over him, and he struck her on the hand with a heavy stick which he carried. Witness was afraid that unless some restraint was put upon the defendant he would do her bodily injury. Defendant was continually annoying her. After she was struck with the stick she went and saw the Senior Sergeant.
Defendant was present, and said he had meant to hit her on the head.
By Mr. Butler: The only reason I have for saying it was my husband was because no one else came near the place. I threw the empty dipper at him after be struck me. It did not hit him, but I wish it had. (Laughter.) Since I have been separated from dependent he has not supplied me with goods of any kind. Mrs Smith and Miss Booth are frequently at my place, because I wish them to be there. By Mr Ryan: Unless my husband's conduct changes I will have to go away from Kiama.
Margaret Booth gave evidence to the effect that on the night in question she went into the yard used by Mrs Torrens and herself, and saw a person there, who, when spoken to, went on to the verandah of an empty house next door, where he commenced to abuse witness. She then recognised the voice as defendant's. He walked on to the footpath, and there said something which witness did not distinctly hear. Mrs. Torrens then came to the front door and threw some water at defendant who hit her with a stick. (Witness' evidence, in the main, was corroborative of complainants.
Mrs. Jane Smith, residing next door to Mrs. Torrens' place, who was at the latter's place on the night in question, gave evidence to the effect that she saw defendant enter Mrs Torrens yard, and afterwards go round to the front of the house, where he used the words mentioned in the summons (Witness also from this stage corroborated complainant's' evidence.)
Senior Sergeant Brayne deposed that on the night of the 29th March he saw both complainant and defendant. They came to him together and each made a complaint Mrs. Torrens stated that she had been hit with a stick, and defendant said that water had been thrown over him. Defendant said it was a pity he had not hit her on the head.
They were haggling together in his presence. He had known Mrs. Torrens for 10 years. She was a most respectable woman.
This closed the evidence for the prosecution, and Defendant deposed: On the night in question, between the hours of eight and nine o o'clock, he was sitting on his own verandah, with two with him until about 9.30. He then went over to Mrs. Torrens place to see his son James and tell him he would get some lettuces for him. He went there for no other purpose. He stood on the footpath and sang out to him, but received no answer. He went into Tate's yard, and the first person he saw was Miss Booth, who said, “ You murdering old scoundrel, are you there ?” She called her dog to “Heel him up” and threw some stones at him. He went to the front, and saw Mrs Smith, who said: “This old wretch is here again, Mrs Torrens.” The latter came out
and said : “ I'll break the old wretch's head if he comes here anymore. “I will bring out something that will put him away from here.” There then came out some combustible from a dipper that that nearly burnt the eyes out of his head–some sort of carbolic soap water. He believed it was from the chamber pot. He threatened to take out a summons and get her “three months.” She said: “You'll get the dipper on your head, you old wretch.” She attempted to throw the dipper at him, and he tried to ward it off with the stick. He did not strike her at all. He then walked away to find a constable. He had never refused his wife anything. Everything he could afford had given her. He had sent her a ton of wood, and also half a cwt, of flour, for which she thanked him.
By Mr. Ryan : I do not keep a boxing saloon, I allow the young fellows to use one of my rooms for boxing. I agreed to pay my wife five shillings a week under a separation deed, and have paid her up to within two months ago. I told the Sergeant that she would have ” deserved it“ if she had got a blow on the head. I don't know that I hit her at all. I was not excited at all.
This concluded the evidence, and after Messrs. Butler and Ryan had addressed the Bench, his Worship bound defendant over to keep the peace for six months, self in a sum of £10, and one surety of £10, or two of £5 each; in default, three months imprisonment in Wollongong gaol. Husband applied for the licence for the Grenadier Hotel at Otford in 1890 but this was refused, this hotel was owned and previously run by his father.
Mrs. Bridget James
There passed away, at her home at Otford, on 25th July, one of the grand old ladies of the Illawarra District, in the person of Mrs. Bridget James, at the age of 87 years.
She was the widow of the late Thomas James, of Otford, who predeceased her by 21 years exactly, he also passing away on 25th July (in the year 1931).
Grandma James, as she was known to everybody in the district was a popular personality, and no one ever visited Otford without calling in for a chat with her.
She was loved by children and adults alike, and it was a most inspiring sight to see the little children, visiting the shop, run through the hall with a word and a kiss for Grandma.
Members of the clergy visiting Otford invariably called to see Mrs. James, when visiting their parishioners, surely an eloquent tribute to her sterling character.
She retained her mental faculties to the last, and it was a great pleasure to listen to her reminiscences of the early days of the district. Her memory for even minor details was amazing.
The late Grandma James (nee Bridget Ryan) came to Australia on the last sailing ship to bring passengers from Britain and was a resident of Otford for 69 years.
She came to Otford to work at the Paragon Hotel, owned-by a Mr. George Welsh, during the building of the Old Otford Tunnel. Later she married the late Thomas James and settled in Otford permanently.
Mrs. James carried on the Otford Post Office and General Store from 1908 until 1921, when she handed over the business to her son, William, who has conducted the business ever since.
During her long residence in Otford, the late Mrs. James always took a prominent part in local functions. Empire Days in particular were outstanding functions during that period.
Mrs. James continued her public activities for many years, until at the age of 80 years, she officially switched on the electric light in Otford, at a function organised by the local progress association on 4th August, 1945.
Grandma James is survived by one brother, Mr. Thomas Ryan, of 97 Wangee Road, Lakemba, who is 93 years of age.
She also leaves a family of five sons Thomas, Herbert, George, William and Arthur and a number of grandchildren.

In January 1882 a new Polish family arrived to Wollongong; the family of Victoria and Paul Radeski. The family lived in Young Street and Paul eventually worked in the one of the local coal mine.
While looking for work on day, Paul and one of his sons John went to Kiama as they heard that there may be jobs at the quarry, breaking up stone. They were too late however, and the job had been taken.
Tired and hungry Paul and John were walking back through Dunmore and they stopped at William and Elizabeth James’ house, Bravella. William James, once a Mayor of Shellharbour, helped the men and let them stay overnight at their family farm. William and Elizabeth gave them food and some money which John used to continue his studies in stain glass window art.
In 1938 John had the opportunity to show his gratitude to William and Elizabeth James for the help he and his father received from them. A new St. Andrews Presbyterian Church was built at Wollongong, and John Radecki was commissioned to do a few windows (some of the windows were brought from the old church). He designed, made, and dedicated one window, the Good Samaritan window, to William and Elizabeth James. Under it he wrote:
“I was a stranger and you took me in. In the grateful remembrance of William James of Shellharbour and his wife Elizabeth who in 1882 befriended artist and his father”.

Cause of Death: suicide
A Mrs. James, of American Creek Kerosene Works, cut her throat with a table knife yesterday morning, and died at 7 o'clock p.m., leaving a husband and two children. The Sydney Morning Herald 21 September 1870
THE LATE SUICIDE AT AMERICAN CREEK.-An inquest was held on Tuesday morning lost, at the house of Mr. Robert James at Violet Hill, American Creek, on the body of Mrs Isabella James, who committed suicide on the previous day by cutting her throat with a table knife. From the evidence given before the jury, and reported in the Illawarra Mercury it was gathered that the deceased had been seriously ill ever since last Easter, and for the last three months had been confined to her bed without hope of recovery. Consequent on the debility produced by such long illness and confinement, feelings of despondency came over her from time to time, and painful doubts of a religious character exercised a disturbing influence on her mind. On more than one occasion she had given utterance to a fear that she should die by her own hand, and, in consequence, a constant watch had been kept over her. On Monday Iast, at her own request she was left alone whilst the family got their dinners, and availing herself of the opportunity, she went into a front room to a cupboard in which a packet of knives had been put by and over-looked taking one from it, and returning to her room, cut her throat. As soon as he had finished his dinner, her son in law Mr Cullen came back to resume his attendance on her, and was surprised to see the bed clothes on the floor. The room was generally kept in a state of partial darkness and on making search he first discovered a pool of blood on the floor near the window, and next the deceased, still alive and breathing heavily, partly under the sofa. Although little injury had been done to the carotid arteries or the larynx, the loss of blood in her enfeebled state resulted in death in about two hours afterwards. She has left a husband, and two daughters. The finding of the jury was to the effect “that she came to her death by cutting her throat, whilst in a state of temporary insanity,” Empire 26 September 1870

After arriving in N.S.W. her husband took the contract of building “Penrose House” for Mr. Evan Evans of Dapto. Became interested in dairying and dairy cattle breeding. His dairy cattle were of the best quality. He settled on what was known as the Bassett-Darley Estate, Shellharbour, a portion of D'Arcy Wentworth's grant. Purchased his farm and called it “Bravella” which in the Cornish dialect means “Hills and Vales”. He was one of the early shareholders in the Farmers' Shipping Company at Shellharbour and joined in the early private company movement to ship butter to England. He purchased the first De Laval separator in the Illawarra and worked it by horse-power. William was also civic minded and was an Alderman of Shellharbour Council from 1859-1888, including Mayor in 1870-71.

Cause of Death: heart disease and bronchitis
In the period 1855-1856, Henry James was granted 256 acres of land near Springhill on Jamberoo Road, which he owned in freehold.
A newspaper report about the death of his daughter, Eliza Emery (nee James) in 1882, stated her father was ‘… the late Mr Henry James of Longbrush, Kiama’.
The ‘Kiama Independent and Shoalhaven Advertiser’, held a report of her husband’s death on 27 December 1866. Combined with evidence given at a Coroner’s Inquest, on 3 January 1867, it seemed Henry and Sarah James were returning home in a dog-cart (spring cart) and, when the wheel of which ran over a tree stump, and both were thrown from the cart. Sarah James (nee Graham) escaped with only a few bruises, while Henry James suffered from several fractured ribs and internal injuries, from which he died about one week later.
Sarah James later owned or leased the Fig Tree Inn, close by a huge Morton Bay fig tree, in Figtree, now a suburb of Wollongong.
In Wollongong City Library, many years ago, there was an article which told that Sarah James (nee Graham) was the licensee of the Figtree Inn. Also mentioned was her son, Henry James, who owned a farm out behind the inn. An electoral roll for the Illawarra district, dated 1874 to 1875, also held his name and stated he lived in Figtree, where his farm was owned in freehold.
‘… 1867 Figtree Inn - a small weatherboard building built alongside the giant fig tree. The name was later changed to Figtree Hotel. The hotel was well known for beer considered to be better than that sold at any other in the district and was popular with travellers and local miners and steelworkers. The building was demolished in 1961 …’.
A report by the newspaper, ‘Cootamundra Herald’, which was reissued in the newspaper, ‘Southern Argus (Goulburn)’, on Thursday, 2 March 1882, differed stated that Eliza Emery was ‘ill’ on the Saturday, and died the following night. It also stated ‘… Her mother was present at her death.’ While Florence A. Emery was not mentioned, Richard J. James and George James, from a nearby property, ‘Belleview’, and Mary J. Cowan (nee James), of Temora Road, were present at the time of their sister’s death.
Sarah James settled at Bethungra, in the Shire of Junee, where she died on 21 May 1887.
She was buried beside the grave of her daughter, Eliza Emery in the Church of England (Anglican) portion of the Cootamundra General Cemetery.

MRS. A. JARMAN
On Sunday last, there passed away, at her home, Bridge Road, Nowra, one of the Godliest of women, and one whose life as a shining example of all that was great, noble, and good.
The deceased lady was Mrs. A. Jarman, wife of Mr Adam Jarman, who for many years was a trusted employee of the Nowra Dairy Co., Ltd.
The late Mrs. Jarman was in her eighty-third year, and when the call came her life of piety, self-sacrifice, and devotion to her Master and her love of husband and family enabled , her to calmly await the arrival of that great moment when the soul shall take wings to that boundless and unexplored expanse above, where the divisions of time shall cease and the glories of an endless eternity burst upon the view.
Mrs. Jarman was born at St. Cullum, Cornwall, England, and came to N.S.W. with her parents as an infant. Her father, the late Mr. Oke, of Yerriyong, came to Wogamia as teacher to the early Glanville family, and after about three years at Wogamia Mr Oke moved to Bolong, where he engaged in share farming under the late David Berry, subsequently shifting to Terara in 1862, where he was engaged by a Mr. Holmes, storekeeper of that centre. After some years at Terara, where the Oke family were resident at the time of the '70 flood,, Mr. Oke again trekked with his family, this time to Brogher's Creek, where he took a ten years ' clearing lease from the late Mr. John Faulks.
Mr. Oke afterwards purchased land at Yerriyang from the late Mr. Michael Hyam.
The deceased lady was married at Terara fifty-three years ago by the Rev. Joshua Hargraves, C.E. minister at that time in charge of the Shoalhaven parish. The bridegroom rode from Brogher 's Creek to Yerriyong to escort his bride to Terara, and after the ceremony the bridal party returned to Yerriyong for the wedding breakfast and dance, and immediately after the festivities left on horseback for Brogher 's Creek, their future home. Afterwards the good lady thought nothing of riding on horseback from Broglier's Creek to Yerriyong to visit her mother, carrying her baby in front of her for the long journey.
Such was the wonderful work of our more than wonderful pioneer women. Deceased resided practically the whole of her life in the vicinity of Nowra and Berry, with the exception of short periods at Bowral and Braidwood.
A husband, two brothers, and a family of seven are left to mourn the loss of this dear old soul. The brothers are Mr. Harold Oke, of Nowra, and Mr. Fred Oke, of Hurstville. The members of the family ,are Mrs. R. Whatman, Bowral; Mrs. E. Winley; Richmond; Mr. A. M. Jarman, Canterbury; and Mrs. R. King, Mrs. H. Stringer, Messrs. L. H. ' and C. A. Jarman, of Nowra. MRS. Wm, JARMAN.
The grim reaper claimed a well-known identity of the Lower River on Wednesday last in the person of Mrs. Wm. Jarman, who passed away in Taree at the age of 64 years
Deceased lived on Jones Island for many years and later on removed to Dumaresque Island, where she and her family remained until her death. Long residence in a district naturally makes many close friends for one but when, to long residence is added a kindly disposition, a thoughtful neighbor and a good mother, the friends one makes are legion. The late Mrs. Jarman was such a woman and her demise will be genuinely regretted by a large circle of people in the district who were intimately acquainted with her.
The body was taken to the Methodist Church on Wednesday night and on Thursday morning a service was held. The funeral left the church at 10 a.m. on Thursday for the Dawson cemetery where the remains were interred….
Deceased leaves a sorrowing husband and family; The sons are: Messrs. Roy, Walter and Fred. The daughters are: Mesdames Herbert Cook (Berry); Fred Cook . (Eungai); K. MRS. M. JARMAN
Mrs. Martha Jarman (84), of Conway Street, Lismore, and a former well known resident, of Dunoon, died in Lismore early yesterday morning after a long illness.
Mrs. Jarman was born at Dapto and married at Kangaloon, the late Henry Jarman. After a short residence in Sydney they came to Lismore, where Mr. Jarman secured a position with the late James and John Dorrough, in a timber mill, which was one of the first established on the upper reaches of the Richmond River. In 1882 Mr. Jarman selected farming property at Dunoon, on which they resided until 1921, when they moved to Byron Bay in retirement. In 1931 they took up residence in Conway Street, Lismore. Mrs. Jarman could recount many experiences of the pioneering days of the Richmond River. It was common for Mr. Jarman to walk to Lismore and carry provisions back to Dunoon. Mrs. Jarman had been an active member of the Methodist Church all her lifetime. Her husband died in 1933.
Four sons, Robert (Tregeagle), Joseph (Lismore), Ernest (Lismore) and Arnold (A.I.F.), and one daughter, Mrs. C. B. Gray, of Eltham, survive. There are 25 grand-children and nine great grand-children. In addition to her son, seven grandsons have served with the forces, and one was a “rat of Tobruk.” Messrs. Alex. Arthur (Brunswick Heads), Will Arthur (Lismore), Samuel Arthur (Sydney) and Henry Arthur (Queensland) are step-brothers of Mrs. Jarman.
The funeral will leave the Lismore Methodist Church to-day after a service, commencing at 12.30 p.m., for the Lismore cemetery.

On Friday night there passed away, in the person of Mrs John Jarrett, one of the best and most respected of the Valley's old residents, at the age of 72 years. The end was not unexpected, as Mrs Jarrett had been ailing for some time past. For a few days before her death she suffered intense pain, which was borne with true Christian fortitude until death reloaded her from further suffering. Great sympathy is felt for the husband and family of the deceased — a family whose simple, honest piety has won the esteem of every section of the community. The late Mrs Jarrett has left a lot of children and grand-children to mourn their loss. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, and was very largely attended
A short service was held at the late residence of the deceased, and at the graveside the Rev. W. St. John Chase delivered an impressive address, seeking to impress upon his hearers the wisdom of emulating the example of the departed lady. In the congregation of the C. E. of this town the kindly, familiar face will be greatly missed and a gap left which will be hard to fill. The Shoalhaven Telegraph (NSW : 1881 - 1937) Wednesday 1 July 1908 p 4

A Troublesome Passenger.
Frederick Jenkins, of Marrickville, was summoned in the Newtown Police Court, for having refused to pay the fare on a tram from Sydney to Marrickville, for a child, and for having impeded a guard in the execution of his duty. Guard Fraser stated that he was in charge of the 11.1 2 pm, from Sydney to Marrickville. The defendant, a lady, who he believed was his wife, and a boy, got in at Bathurst -street. Defendant paid for himself and his wife, but would not pay for the boy, as his wife said that he should not do so. Further on the journey he asked the defendant for the child's fare, whereupon he asked his wife if he should strike him (Fraser), and she replied, 'hit him hard.' The defendant then struck him on the eye, blackening it. His uniform was torn, and he lost his cap. The defence was that the child was 9 years of age and was nursed up to Victoria road, and was then put on a seat. The fare was offered and refused. Mr. O'Malley Clarke, S.M., remarked that from his own experience, he was sure that the tram guards were a very respectful body of men, and were a credit to the service. He never had had the slightest occasion to complain of one of them. The defendant was fined £2 and 4s 10d costs, or fourteen days, for having refused to pay the fare and the other case was dismissed. Letitia was widowed and had lost two young sons while still in her early forties. She became a businesswoman managing boarding houses in the city and at Kangaroo Point. The Longreach Private Boarding House which she leased in 1879 was a highly sucessfully operation. Letitia bought Cabury on Kensington Terrace which she renamed Mallow after her birthplace in Ireland. In 1899 she sold Mallow to Sir Robert Philp. When Letitia died in 1908, she left a substantial estate. DEATH OF MRS JEPHSON
A very large circle of friends, both in Brisbane and also in the Southern States, will learn with deep regret of the death of Mrs. Letitia Jephson, which took place yesterday in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, where she has been an inmate for the past three and a half months suffering from the after effects of influenza. The deceased, who was 80 years of age at the time of her death, has for over two years been unable to lead a very active life, owing to having sustained a severe injury to her leg. Old residents will remember that Mrs. Jephson was a Miss Arabin, of Victoria, and was an aunt of the two unfortunate girls, the Misses Saunders, who went out to China some time ago as missionaries, and were massacred. Years ago Mrs. Jephson leased the Longreach Hotel, and it was under her management one of the most successful boarding-houses in Brisbane. Since relinquishing her interests in Brisbane Mrs. Jephson did some travelling, taking two trips to Japan, and she lived for some time in the South. The funeral will take place this afternoon, leaving town for the Toowong Cemetery at 4 o'clock. The Brisbane Courier (Qld. : 1864 - 1933) Monday 6 January 1908 p 7

As briefly recorded in our last issue, Mrs, Jervis, of Kiama, passed over to the great majority, at the age of 68 years, She was of a hardy and healthy constitution, having had very little sickness, and up to Monday was hale and hearty,
But on Tuesday evening she was confined to her bed, suffering from the effects of a paralytic stroke, which subsequently caused her death on Friday afternoon last at 4 o'clock, The deceased, who was a kindly disposed and unassuming person, was highly respected in and around Kiama. She came to the colony some 17 years ago from County Fermanagh, Ireland, her husband having preceded her to his long home some 4 years previously,
She leaves behind to mourn their loss 3 sons and 3 daughters, vie, Mrs. T, Torrens (Shellharbour), Mrs, Sproule (Kiama), Miss Margaret, and Messrs. Robert, William and James. The deceased lady belonged to the Church of England. Her remains were borne to their last resting place on Sunday afternoon, followed by a number of friends and sympathisers, The burial rites at the graveside were performed by the Rev, U. Stephens, of Jamboroo. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved sons and daughters,

Wedding. JOHNSON— MATHIE. A wedding in which great interest was manifested took place in the Albion Park Presbyterian Church on Wednesday after noon last, the contracting parties being Miss Annie Mathie (only daughter of Mrs Mathie, widow of the late Mr William Mathie, J.P.), and Mr. W. J. Johnson, of Jasper's Brush (second son of Mr J. C. Johnson, J P, Rose Valley, Gerringong). The Rev E. Miller, B.A., officiate; and the church was packed with persons witnessing the ceremony. The dresses worn by the bride and her attendants were particularly charming, and with these, and very many other attractively attired ladies the scene (according to the South Coast Herald) was fairylike. Miss Mathie (the bride) wore a beautiful white silk, with customary wreath and veil; she carried a shower bouquet, and was bedecked also with a gold muff chain and bangle (gifts of the bridegroom). Miss Margaret Russell (principal bridesmaid), wore a handsome brooch, and her two companions- Misses Mabel and Amelia Johnson— sisters of the bridegroom—each wore charms, the three articles of jewellery being gifts of the bridegroom Miss Russell was attired in cream French delaine, white hat, chiffon and feathers ; Misses Johnson, white silk with white picture hats to match. The happy couple were married beneath a beautiful and unique floral marriage bell, the handiwork of Mrs E. Miller. Mr Malcolm Mathie was best man, and Messrs George and Thos. Johnson were groomsmen. The church choir sang 'The Voice that Breathed O'er Eden,' and Miss Ida Couch— who presided at the organ —played the Wedding March as the party filed out of the church. After the nuptial knot had been well and truly tied, the wedding party drove from the church to the Agricultural Hall, where a reception was held, about ninety friends and relations … The Shoalhaven Telegraph (NSW: 1879 - 1937) Wednesday 25 December 1901 p 1

This was a claim by Herbert Johnson for divorce from his wife, Elizabeth Amelia Johnson, to whom he was married at Wollongong on May 20, 1891, on the ground of desertion, Mr. Waddy, instructed by Mr. Way, appeared for petitioner, and the cause was undefended. According to the evidence respondent left petitioner's domicile in July, 1892, and though repeatedly urged to return thither declined to do so. She expressed a preference for such freedom from a husband's thraldom as would afford no opportunities of “seeing life.” The form of pleasure she was partial to dancing, to which pastime her husband objected, His Honor: I am satisfied you were very jealous of her. Respondent: I do not think so. His Honor: The statements you have made convince me of it. His Honor granted a decree nisi, returnable in one month. The Sydney Morning Herald 9 March 1898

MRS. W. M. JOHNSON
After about fifty years' residence in the town, and a useful life of 77 years, Mrs. W. M. Johnson died at her residence in Swamp-street, Casino, on Wednesday evening. Deceased was a native of Fermanagh, Ireland, and came to Australia in 1860, something like 55 years ago. After some time in the Kiama district, she came on to the Richmond fifty years ago, and practically all her remaining lifetime was spent in the Casino district. She had many interesting reminiscences of the pioneering days, when she was often called on to act as both doctor and nurse amongst the scattered settlers.
No call was ever made without a response, and her unselfish service won many lasting friendships. Mr. Johnson, who was the builder of one of the first saw pits on the rivers, and a family of four sons and three daughters, survive her, two daughters and one son having predeceased the mother. The surviving children are Mrs. R. Sheppard (Casino), Mrs. J. Gray (Casino), Mrs. Clark (Byron Bay), and Messrs. ANNIE ELIZABETH JOHNSTON.
Annie Elizabeth Johnston was born 64 years ago in Newcastle, of Methodist parents. When about 16 years of age she yielded her life to Christ in the Parramatta Church, under the ministry of the Rev. Charles Olden.
She immediately entered upon a life of active service for her Master. Until, fourteen years ago, when her health began to fail, she was actively engaged in Sunday school work in various circuits of this State. In the Dorrigo Circuit she was instrumental in establishing a Sunday school.
In many circuits she also acted as organist. She possessed a sweet, sympathetic voice, and frequently preached the gospel in song. While residing in one of the centres of the Dorrigo Circuit, there being no Methodist service, she graciously opened her home for worship.
Throughout her life she took a deep interest in temperance reform, and frequently addressed public gatherings on the question. She was also passionately devoted to evangelistic work, and was never ashamed to testify to the saving and keeping power of Christ, both in the open-air and indoors. She married Mr. W. R. H. Johnston in the year 1891 in the Parramatta Church, the officiating minister being the Rev. Matthew Parkinson. She lived successively at Wollongong, Bowral, Moss Vale, Kembla, Eureka, Dorrigo, Picton, Glen Innes, and for the past ten years at Grafton
The late Mrs. Johnston was passionately devoted to Christ, and experienced a very real and deep sense of His presence. Like Daniel, she opened her western window three times every day for communion with her God. To the day of her death, throughout her wedded life, she engaged in earnest prayer three times a day. She loved Methodism and her people. She was deeply loyal to her church and her minister. It was always a joy for her minister to visit her home, and one came away refreshed in spirit, and encouraged, after fellowship with her in Christ.
Only an extraordinary circumstance would ever be allowed to prevent her attendance at the House of God, and she trained her children to follow her steps. She was a most affectionate wife and mother, and her family now rise up and call her blessed. Frail of body, she was robust in faith. Her sweet spirit took its flight in the early morning of January 27. She died in her sleep, although she retired in her usual health, after commending her family to God in prayer.
Like Enoch, she walked with God, and she was not, for God took her.
Her body was laid to rest in Grafton Cemetery on January 28, and a largely-attended in memoriam service was held in Grafton Church on Sunday morning, February 18. 'Servant of God, well done!' The Methodist (Sydney, NSW: 1892 - 1954) Saturday 10 March 1934 p 17

Joseph Johnson applied for a variation of an order made against him at a previous Court under which he was ordered to pay 22s 6d per week for the support of his wife. Mr. Russell appeared for applicant, and Mr. Lysaght appeared to oppose on behalf of Mrs. Johnson. Mr. Russell stated that at a previous Court an order had been made against the applicant for 22s 6d per week, and an undertaking had been given that no application would be made on behalf of the two children. Since the order had been made Johnson had taken possession of tho children, consequently he asked for a variation of the order, Joseph Johnson gave evidence to the effect that he visited his children fortnightly after the order was made against him. Owing to the filthy condition in which he found the children, he took possession of them and placed them in the custody of his sister, Mrs Lacey, who was paid 10s weekly for looking after the children. Emily Lacey, a married woman, residing with her husband at Waterloo, deposed that her brother brought his two children to her home and asked her to look after therm The children were in a filthy condition at the time. Elizabeth Mary Johnson, wife of Joseph Johnson, deposed she resided at Port Kembla. When she obtained an order against the applicant, the children were living with her, and on the 28th December her husband visited the children and asked her to let him take them up to the shop to buy something for them. She consented and the children went with him in the ordinary clothes in which they were playing about, and defendant took them away with him. The children were well looked after whilst they were in her care. An Order was made for a reduction of the order made to 15s. Joseph Johnson (a colored man) was charged with leaving his wife without support. Mr. Lysaght for plaintiff, Mr. Champion for defendant. Elizabeth Mary Johnson, wife of defendant, deposed that since she obtained an order against her husband for maintenance he had paid it; that order expired in October; before the order expired he went to her and wanted her to go back and live with him; her husband is living at Bellambi, and she lived at Port Kembla; she would not go back and live with him as She was afraid of his cruelty ; he used to punch her and kick her; she was not willing to go back and live with him ; at Christmas time he took the children away from her; she kept a boarding house at Port Kembla ; her husband worked at Bellambi Coke Works, and earned 8s or 9s per day. By Mr. Champion : At the time of the separation from my husband, I went to Sydney to some friends; I am keeping a boarding house at Port Kembla, and have three boarders; three months ago I had fourteen; they left because they were out of work ; Joe Dickson works for me; I have not been able to pay him anything ; he is willing to stay with a home; he has been with me a month or so ; I gave him 6s per week pocket money at first. For the defence. Joseph Johnson, employed at Bellambi Cokeworks, deposed he had been employed for about ten years at the Bellambi Coko Works ; it was not correct that he ever ill treated his wife ; he was prepared to provide a home for his wife ; his wife left on her own accord ; when a she left him he was only home once a fortnight. their children are with his sister a the Nambucca River; he was paying £1 per week for keep of his children; he received £5 8s per fortnight pay. At this juncture tho Court was oleared, and Mrs. Johnson made a serious oharge against her husband. Defendant denied the charge. Cross-examined by Mr. Lysaght defendant deposed : On the occasion of the first order being made against me I was represented by Mr. Russell, I instructed him to consent to an order, I earn 9s per day. An order was made for the payment of 15s per week, Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950)Tuesday 19 November 1912 - Page 2

Gerard, at the age of nine, arrived with his parents in 1854. The family settled in Dapto where they engaged in farming. They were devout Methodists and strongly supported the church as it developed in Illawarra. Their Dapto home became the headquarters for the ministers as did their home in the Wingecarribie district when they moved there, selecting blocks under the provisions of the Robertson Land Act of 1861. Later Gerard moved to Clunes on the Richmond River and ran a successful dairy farm. He spent the last thirteen years of his life in retirement in Sydney.

MRS ISABELLA JOHNSTONE
On Tuesday morning at noon, the death took place of Mrs. Isabella Johnstone, in her 87th year, at her residence Gipps-street, Kiama. Some 7 months go the old lady took a paralytic seizure and has been helpless ever since, devotedly cared for by her son Mr. Frank Johnston and his family.
The funeral took place on Wednesday the funeral at North Kiama, and at the gravesite the Rev. J. W. A. Watkin son officiated. Two children of a family survive her in Mr. Frank Johnston and Mrs. N. J. Smith, of Sydney. Her husband Mr. J. Johnston predeceased her 59 years ago, and was buried at Cambewarra where he was engaged in the timber industry, one of the men who in earlier days came to the Jamberoo district then known as Woodstock.
The late Mrs. Johnston was one of the oldest native born left in Illawarra and born at Waughope, Jamberoo, over 86 years ago. She saw many changes take place in her native district and in earlier days when young and strong rode great distances over rough bush tracks to homes where sickness was or where a young Australian had to be ushered into the world. In over 50 years of nursing she must have cared for many hundreds of babies, and in general nursing the call of distress was never left unanswered by her, in days when doctor’s skill and nursing care were harder to get than now. With her passing is broken another connecting link in the history of the district where few of her generation remain. The sad news that Mrs. Paterson Johnston, of Bangalow, passed away on Tuesday evening last caused a wave of sympathy to spread over the town. The deceased lady had been ailing for the last eleven weeks, during which she had been an inmate of Nurse Kindred's private hospital. Although attended by three doctors, who did all that was possible for the sufferer, her illness terminated fatally on the 18th June, the second anniversary of the death of her sister, the late Mrs. James Walker, of Albion Park. Mrs. Johnston was the daughter of Mr. Andrew Moles, J.P., of Toongla, Albion Park, and sister of Mr. A. Moles, of Eureka. The causes of death were septicoemia and pyocmina. She was 42 years of age, and leaves a family of three daughters, the youngest about three months old, and a sorrowing husband, to mourn their loss. The funeral moved from Bangalow at 10 a.m. on Thursday for Eureka, a large concourse of friends and sympathisers following the hearse. …

Mrs Margaret Jane Johnston
It is with feeling of deep regret and much sympathy for the relatives that the news of the passing in her sleep of Mrs Margaret Jane Johnston of “Ellenthorpe” Tenterfield was received last Friday morning. The deceased lady was very well known and most highly respected by a large circle of friends in this district and on the Richmond. Her passing removes one who has endeared herself to many by her kindly sympathy and generous spirit.
The late Mrs Johnston was the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Black and was born at Gerringong in 1854, being 78 years old at the time of her death. Her father was an Ulster man with Huguenot strain in his ancestry. Her mother was the daughter of the nephew of Governor Hindmarsh, a Governor of South Australia in its early days.
Her father was a great churchman and was acknowledged to have been one of the pillars of South Coast Methodism. The deceased lady followed in the footsteps of her parents, and was an ardent church worker from the age of 16 years, and for many years was the Vice President of the Ladies' Church Aide Society of the Tenterfield Methodist Church.
After her marriage to Mr David Johnston 57 years ago, they lived at “Omega Retreat”, Gerringong, being engaged in the dairy industry. Later they moved to Richmond River, and after 15 years pioneering the Big Scrub, they moved, with their young family to Tenterfield, where they have lived for the past 32 years. On the 4 May 1925 they celebrated their golden wedding amidst a happy gathering of family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, six sons and two daughters. The daughters are Miss Maude Johnston and Mrs S J Staines. The sons are Jack, Thomas, Cyril, George, Ralph, and James. One son Norman paid the supreme sacrifice at the Great War.There are 32 grandchildren and three great grand children. Three brothers also survive- Messers Robert, John and William Black together with five sisters Mrs W H East, Mrs J Dinning (Sydney), Mrs George Morrow (Roseville), and the Misses Charlotte and Isobel Black (Sydney).
The funeral directed by Mr J P Cooper, was very well attended on Saturday afternoon, when there was a large representation of all sections of the community gathered to pay their last tribute of respect. The service was conducted at the home and at the graveside by Rev W H Willey who spoke in complimentary terms of the consistent life of the deceased. There was a great number of beautiful floral tributes sent by sympathetic friends. The remains were laid to rest in the Methodist portion of the local Cemetery.

MRS. C. JOHNSTON.
IT is with feelings of sadness that we chronicle the death of Mrs. Chas. Johnston, wife of the late Mr. Chas. Johnston, of Gerringong. The deceased lady arrived with her husband in this colony some 44 years ago, from County Fermanagh, Ireland, and with her husband, resided on a portion of the Berry Estate, where they cleared a farm and made a home, and lived there happily with their family until the year 1881. She was then bereaved of her husband, but being reconciled to the will of God, she labored on in the old home for the welfare of her family, and all around her, until the year 1898, when she removed with the unmarried portion of her family to the Richmond River, where she enjoyed good health until about six months ago. She then began to fail, but was not confined to her room until a few weeks before her death although the skilful service of Dr. Smith-Hezier warn enlisted on her behalf, with the careful and devoted nursing of her daughters' loving hands, she passed peacefully away on the 15th September,. .. The family were devout Methodists and strongly supported the church as it developed in Illawarra.

A PIONEER OF THE GOLDFIELDS
The funeral of Mrs. Sarah Johnstone took place in the Presbyterian, portion of the Kalgoorlie cemetery on Tuesday. Mrs. Johnstone, who had been in failing health for some time, died in the. St. John of God Hospital on Sunday night. The late Mrs. Johnstone was a goldfields pioneer. Born in Slamanan (Scotland) in 1859, she went to Bulli (New South Wales) with her husband, Mr. David Johnstone, in 1883. They shifted to Western Australia in 1888 and acquired a hotel at Parker's Range, where they remained until 1891, when, they returned to New South Wales. In 1894 Mr. and Mrs. Johnstone returned to Western Australia. Travelling by rail to Southern Cross, they joined one of Cobb and Co's. coaches and came to Kalgoorlie. They opened a grocery business in Boulder road opposite the site where the Kalgoorlie Foundry now stands. Selling this business to Mr. Johnstone's brother, they built a hotel at Corsair,' about five miles from Golden Ridge. Disposing of the hotel, they shifted to Egan street and opened the Heather-bell Guest House, where the Tattersall's Club now stands. After remaining there for several years they lived privately behind Maritana Hill and, later still, shifted to West Boulder, where they opened a dining-room. Disposing of this, they bought the old Rotunda Amusement Hall, which they converted into a dining-room and conducted as such for, some years, after which they lived privately near the Junction. Some years later they opened a restaurant opposite the Kalgoorlie post office, and from there, in 1922, they shifted to the old Globe Hotel, which they converted into Johnstone's Coffee Palace, where Mrs. Johnstone remained until her death. Mrs. Johnstone's husband, Mr. David Johnstone, died in 1937, but she is survived by a married daughter and a son. Kalgoorlie Miner (WA : 1895 - 1950) Thursday 13 February 1941 p 1

Late Mrs Jolliffe
The Raleigh Sun makes the following correction:— In a recent report of the death of Mrs. M. A. Joliffe, we were wrongly informed that the late Mrs. Jolliffe came to the Bellinger with her late husband, Mr. Jolliffe died on the South Coast and Mrs. Jolliffe, with her then very young family came to the Bellinger to, work a dairy farm for a Mr. Cook at Hydes Creek. The little girl that was killed on the South Coast, by a train was a grand-daughter and not a daughter, as stated. She was the daughter of Mrs. Bright, who was well known to Gleniffer residents.
Mrs. Jolliffe was a veritable pioneer of the dairying industry of the Illawarra district. Her parents milked cows for the Lindsay family nearly 70 years ago, and she herself commenced to milk at Lindsay's Illawarra farm at the age of six years, and continuously milked cows all her life until within a few years of her death. she lost her husband when her six children were mere babies and then had to work dairy farms to support her young family. She was born at what is now known as Unanderra, near Wollongong, and saw the birth of the great dairying industry with which she had been associated all her life. It is very rarely that a woman is referred to as a pioneer, but as the late Mrs. Jolliffe carried on single handed for the best part of 30 years her name deserves to be chronicled with those of the hardy pioneers of the great dairying industry. LATE MRS. AMELIA JONES
One of the most noted personalities and. a pioneer of the district passed away after a short and severe ill ness on Monday, August 7th, in the person of Mrs. Amelia Jones, of Prince's Highway, Corrimal. The news of her illness and subsequent death came as a shock to her relatives and. host of friends, as she had lived a very active life and still took a keen interest in the business of E. A. Jones & Co, Ltd., of which she was the founder. Born in North Wales in 1860, with her young husband, the late Mr. Elias Arthur Jones, she came to Australia in 1886. Her first home in Australia was at Austinmer, where her husband acted as under manager of a colliery at Austinmer, under, his brother, the late Jacob Carlos Jones. Later he became manager of the Bellambi Colliery — known as 'The Model' — and was afterwards appointed manager of Corrimal Colliery. Since then, Mrs. Jones resided up to the time of her death in Corrimal — a period of 52 years. After the death of her husband in 1901, when she was left alone to rear a young family of six, Mrs. Jones founded the business now known as E. A. Jones & Co. Ltd. The first store was opened on the site of the Princess Theatre, and the second where Riordan's shop - at present stands. Later Mrs. Jones had the present commodious store built. In 1924 she paid a visit to her native land, Wales, and also made an extended tour, of the, Continent in company, with her youngest daughter, Gwladys. During her long residence in Corrimal, Mrs. Jones had seen the town grow, from a very small village, with a small shop or two in the main street, to the present thriving township of approximately 5,000 inhabitants. In her long and active life, the grand old lady was noted for her many deeds of charity arid kindliness. With a lifelong friend, Mrs. Matthew Green, she collected for many years, until advancing age made it impossible to continue, for such worthy objects as the Deaf and Dumb Institution, Renwick Children's Hospital, Home for Incurables, Crippled Children's Hospital, and others., Many will recall to memory the visits these two great friends made at the homes of sickness and sorrow and the many parcels left at the doors of those In need. During the last Great War, and even in the present world struggle. Mrs. Jones took a keen interest in the activities of the. Red Cross and Patriotic movements financially and otherwise. The funeral service, which was largely attended, was held in the Presbyterian Church, Corrimal on Wednesday, August 9th. It was conducted by Rev. R.. D.irch, assisted, by the Rev. H. H. Childs, of Kiama, who was Minister in charge of Corrimal for many years. After the service, the cortege proceeded to the Woronora Crematorium, … A family of five survive. The eldest son, the late Herbert Wyndham Jones, passed away in March, 1943. Surviving members are Mrs. D. J. Davies (Vic.), Mr. A. R. Jones (Wollongong), Mr. ,T. C. .Jones. (Corrimal), Mrs. G. M. Hindmarsh (Wollongong), Miss . G. Jones (Corrimal) and 17 grandchildren arid five great grandchildren. .. MRS. ELIZA JONES.
By the removal of Mrs. Jones, wife of Mr. Richard Jones, Bulli has lost one of its oldest residents, and the Methodist Church the longest resident member on the church roll. Over forty years ago, her family lived more than a mile from the church, half-way up the mountain road. She had the care of a large and growing family, yet almost every Sunday she was in her place as a teacher in the Sunday school and an earnest worshipper in the church. In her youthful days she kept a journal or diary, which clearly shows her heart was fixed rejoicing in the Lord as her Saviour. For over half a century she could read her title clear to mansions in the skies. For some years she was in a weak and failing state of health. Occasionally she was laid up by sudden attacks of illness. On December 14th she got up apparently as well as before. After breakfast the family had prayer and Scripture reading, and she took part in these exercises with more than usual earnestness and emotion. Shortly after she complained of pain, and all that could be done was done to give her relief, but without avail. In about two hours she passed to 'the land that is fairer than day, ' ' at the ripe age of 75 years, and on the 16th, was interred in the Wollongong Methodist cemetery, in sure and certain hope of a resurrection to eternal life. The Rev. A. M. Yates officiated at a short service in the home, and at the grave. She leaves, a grown-up family of four sons and six daughters, and her aged partner in life to mourn their loss. Truly it can be said, 'Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.' She was indeed 'a mother in Israel.' She bore the afflictions and changes of this life with a patience and fortitude that proved how truly the secret source of her strength had more than a merely human origin. On Sunday, about half-past six o'clock, a rather serious accident happened to the new store occupied by Mrs. Jones. While the family were seated at tea a terrific crash was heard, throwing all into a state of the utmost consternation, as from the sound nothing less than that half the building had been carried away was expected. Upon investigation it was found that the brick parapet above the wall on the east side of the building had been carried away by the force of the gale, which at that time was blowing with great fury, and in the fall had utterly demolished the balcony upon the side which it overlooked. A cow belonging to Mr. W. Kirk, which had sought shelter from the wind and rain, was with difficulty removed from the debris, but sustained such severe injuries that she had to be destroyed. Fortunately, no human lives were lost. Had the accident occurred upon any other evening than Sunday, it is almost certain that some persons would have been standing about in front of the store. The parapet consisted of at least eight tons of brick, and its destruction, together with the balcony, will be a serious loss to Mrs. Jones, and their reconstruction will entail considerable expense. Florence Hester deposed I am the wife of Edward Hester, and reside at Tarrawanna. My husband is a laborer. The child, W. E. Hester, whose body the jury has seen, was my son. He was 1 year and 9 months old. I last saw my child alive by himself in the fowl-house about half-past 12 o'clock yesterday. He was playing by himself in the backyard. I was in the yard doing some washing. My sister-in-law, Mary Hester, was in the yard with us, but left us about 20 minutes before I discovered the body of the child. I was washing with my back towards the child.
About a quarter of an hour after I saw him in the fowl-house I missed him. I went to look for him, calling his name. I went to the hole in the yard and saw the child lying on his back, with his head under water. The whole body was under the water, but the lighter clothes were floating. The hole is about 2ft. deep where his head was. I cannot account for the child getting in the hole,- I pulled him out, and called out for assistance, and my sister-in-law and come neighbors came in. We did everything possible to restore him, but the efforts were of no use. The child's life was not insured in any way. John Hester, my husband's brother, dug the hole to keep water in some time ago. I told my husband once that I considered the hole dangerous, for fear any of the children would fall in. I told him he ought to fill it up or put logs on it. He promised to do so, but never did it, and I forgot to remind him again.
Mary Alice Hester deposed; Yesterday, about 12.30, I heard my sister-in-law screaming, and went to her as soon as possible. I saw her with the deceased child in her arms. I examined him and thought he was dead. I then went for some of the neighbors, but when we came back we saw the child was dead. Mrs. Payne, one of the neighbors, tried to restore it but failed.
I never considered whether it was dangerous to little children running about the yard alone. The waterhole has been there for about 15 months. Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950) Thursday 15 July 1897 p 2

Mrs. Nellie Jones, of Baringa-street. Mayfield, was awarded £9, with 9s 6d costs, at Newcastle Small Debts Court to-day, in a claim against Walter Mason, of the Criterion Hotel, Newcastle.
Mrs. Jones said that she had lent Mason £5 to buy a car, and £4 for the registration, and since then, had asked him to pay some of the money. He had not done so. Her son, James Akers, of Mayfield, gave evidence in support. William Edward Jones, of Mayfield, plaintiff's husband, said that he heard Mason promise to pay the money back.

MRS. CATHERINE JORDAN—80 Years
There passed away in the Kiama District Hospital on Monday night an old and respected resident of the Shellharbour district in the person of Mrs. Catherine Jordan at the advanced age of 80 years. She had been in hospital for many months, following a severe breakdown and heart trouble, and a pathetic coincidence was the fact that her husband, Mr. Charles Jordan, is also an inmate of the hospital, having only left there a few days some months ago, after a serious illness with pneumonia, when he fractured his hip and was again admitted to the hospital.
Sincere district sympathy goes out to him in his bereavement and affliction, also to their family.
A kindly soul, Mrs. Jordan will be missed in Shellharbour, where she was well-known and liked for her many acts of neighbourly assistance.

Mrs. W. Jordan, of Port Kembla, had an exciting experience on Friday last. Hearing a commotion among the fowls, she investigated, and found that the cause of the trouble was a black snake about 4 feet long, which glided away and was lost before an implement could be found to kill it with. f. Jabboo Malhami m. Traesia Baer
Both resident Flinders Street
Her father is listed as Chief of Police. Both the husband and male witness signed in Syrian.
Her husband Nahum Joseph on his naturalization 18 September 1896 listed his occupation as hawker and was a native of Jebail Syria, his residence was Wollongong. He and his unnamed brother arrived on the ‘Yarra’ in 1890 as Mr Nahome and brother. After his naturalisation there is no further record of this couple in the Illawarra or NSW.
Her husband was still living in Wollongong in 1900 when he was accused of assaulting a man while drunk. He was also listed in the 1903 electoral roll.
It was common for Syrian hawkers (peddlers) to be women. The Illustrated Sydney News on 19 November 1892 said “We have become familiar in most Australian cities with the gracefully-formed and laborious women who, in broken English accent, seek good-natured customers for their infinite variety of small domestic wares, perfumes, and curios from the East. In some cases the basket of wares on the arm is balanced on the other by an olive-complexioned and dark-eyed babe. Some of these women are young and pretty, and possess a native dignity which many a duchess would envy.”
