MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY.
The Deputy Coroner (Mr. J. Kirby) conducted a Magisterial Inquiry at the Police Court, Wollongong, this morning, touching the death of Bridget O'Brien, better known as Bridget Rowles. Matron Richmond, of the Wollongong Hospital, gave evidence as to finding the body of deceased on the morning of the 17th inst., in the hospital grounds, lying partly in blackberry bushes. Constable Oswald Smith gave evidence to being called to the Hospital, where he saw the body of deceased lying on her back. It was in a terrible state, being flyblown, and covered with ants. Dr. Kerr examined the body and ordered its removal to the morgue. A sugar bag containing meat was beside the body and three or four cakes of soap. From enquiries made he had ascertained that deceased was 67 years of age, and a native of Ireland. Her husband's name was Patrick O'Brien, and he had not been heard of for the last 5 or 6 years, when he was in Queensland. She had two sons. Dr. J. Kerr deposed that he had examined the body, and in his opinion death had taken place 36 hours previously. He saw no external marks of violence, and nothing to indicate that death had occurred from other than natural causes. The most probable cause of death would be cerebral haemorrhage or heart disease. Frederick John Cooke, motor car proprietor, deposed that he knew deceased as Biddy Rowles. On Saturday last about 6 a.m. he saw her sitting on a seat near the hospital gates. That would be about 60 yards from where the body was found. A verdict of death from natural causes was recorded. Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950) Friday 21 January 1927 p 2

MRS. P. O'BRIEN
After spending almost the whole of the 79 years of her life in Wollongong, Mrs. P. O'Brien of Burella Street, passed away suddenly at her residence last Tuesday evening. The deceased lady had been in reasonably good health during the day and her sudden demise, caused through heart failure, came as a shock to her relatives. Arriving in Australia at a very early age with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. Waters, shortly after the historic wreck of the 'Dunbar, ' the family settled down in Wollongong and made their home on the exact spot where the deceased lady breathed her last. Though of a quiet and retiring disposition, the deceased lady by her many kindly acts and upright life, had made a host of close friends. Her late husband, Mr. P. O'Brien, passed away some 20 years ago, after a useful residence in this district. Mrs. O'Brien leaves behind a family of three sons and four daughters to mourn the loss of a devoted mother. The attendance at the funeral which moved from St. Francis Xavier's this afternoon for the R.C. Cemetery marked the esteem in which the family is held in this district. There passes another of the pioneers who so effectively blazed the trail in the Illawarra district. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved. OBITUARY MRS. K. O'BRIEN The death occurred on Saturday morning last at her residence, Dalmeny Street, Rosebery, of Mrs. Keziah O'Brien, at the age of 76 years. As previously reported, Mrs. O'Brien had been an inmate of the Lewisham Hospital for a week, and she had been able to return home, but, unfortunately, her recovery was only temporary. Losing her husband early in life and left with two young sons, Mrs. O'Brien displayed her strength of character by carrying on admirably with the, big task with which she had been left. She took over the duties as postmistress at Gerringong, and held that office with conspicuous success for nearly 40 years. Her courtesy and efficiency at all times were outstanding, and she rendered a remarkable service to the community. In any cases of distress or misfortune, her ready sympathy and help was always available, and she made a wide circle of friends who will always remember her with affection and esteem,. The late Mrs. O'Brien suffered many misfortunes, which she bore with fortitude. One of her sons (Fred) died at an early age, and the second (Aussie) enlisted in the first A.I.F., and paid the supreme sacrifice of dying for his country in France. He had been familiarly known as “Boss” and was one of the most outstanding footballers on the South Coast, having played for Gerringong and Nowra clubs. Some ten years ago Mrs. O'Brien retired from active work, and went to live in Sydney. Many young men, now in the Postal Department and working in responsible jobs, owe their early training in departmental work to her skill and painstaking, and they have the kindliest recollection of her. The funeral took place at the Catholic cemetery, Gerringong, on Saturday last, the Rev. Father Irish officiating. Mrs. M. O'BRIEN
A resident of this district for over 30 years, Mrs. Margaret O'Brien, died at her residence, 6 Atcheson street, Wollongong, on Saturday.
She was born in Sydney 71 years ago, being the only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Cleary. Following her father's death, her mother was licensee of the Bellambi hotel for about six years.
She married the late Mr. John Michael O'Brien, and assisted him in conducting the Royal Alfred Hotel.
The late Mrs. O'Brien, although not taking an active part in the public life of the town, had proved an exemplary citizen and no one in need of help ever went to her in vain.
A keen musician, she was a capable pianiste and banjoist, and for many years she was a valued supporter of the district orchestral society, and for quite a period the regular practices of this orchestra were held at the hotel.
To the family of four, Mick Queenie (Mrs Ferris), Molly (Mrs Walker), and Sheila (Mrs. Dwyer) and to her two brothers Joe Cleary (Bondi Junction) and Jim Cleary (Wollongong) sincere sympathy is extended.

Two very old residents of Dapto-Mrs, Timothy O'Brien and Mrs. Matt. Reen— died within the past week. Mrs. O'Brien, who was called to her reward on Saturday of last week, had reached the ripe old age of 68. Her death was truly edifying and resigned to God's will. When she received the last Sacraments on the day before her death she expressed herself perfectly content, and ready for the last summons. She was interred in West Dapto Cemetery, and the very large funeral was convincing proof of the high esteem in which she was held. DEATH OF A PIONEER
MRS. D. T. O'BRIENThe death occurred at Kensington, Sydney, on Tuesday, July 2nd, of Mrs. D. T. O'Brien, a lady who resided for many years at Mt. Keira, and who might rightly be regarded as one of the pioneers of Illawarra. The late Mrs. O'Brien had reached the patriarchal age of 89 years, and for the last twenty years or more had resided with one of her daughters, Mrs. Lowrie. Death was due to senile decay. The deceased was the wife of Mr. David T. O'Brien, who over 50 years ago was the miners stockweighman at the Keira Colliery, a position he held with satisfaction to the miners, and with credit to himself for something like a quarter of a century, when death called him to his eternal, reward. The late Mrs. O'Brien came to Illawarra from Ireland with her sister 75 years ago, she being then only 14 years of age. When still in her teens she married, her husband being a member of another pioneer family—the O'Brien's. Of her family of five daughters, four entered the religious, life. Three of these still survive— one being the Mother Superior of the Boollaroo Convent, Newcastle district; another Sister Eunice, Nyngan; and the third, Sister Camilla, of the Glen Innes Convent. The oldest daughter is the wife of Mr. W. Lowrie, of the Epsworth Printing Works, Sydney, and another daughter, Miss Minnie O 'Brien, has put up something of a record by being resident with Mrs H Rauch, of Nowra, for 40 years. The only son, Mr. Dave O'Brien, is headmaster of the Hillgrove Public School. The mortal remains of the deceased were interred in the Waverly cemetery, Rev. Father O'Connor, of Clovelly, performing the last sad rites. Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950) Friday 13 July 1928 p 5

Cornelius originally came to Illawarra to manage the property “Athanlin” (now “Yallah”) owned by his uncle William Browne. In 1821 he discovered a new road down the escarpment and, in the same year was granted 300 acres at the foot of the present Bulli Pass. He sold this land in 1836 to Robert Marsh Westmacott. He was a Magistrate and J.P. and also owned land at East Bargo, Bathurst, and Kangaroo Valley. After the sale of the Bulli property Cornelius and Rebecca moved to Yass. After his death she moved to Sydney. Her brother was part of the Hamilton Hume party which discovered the Yass plains in 1821.

The blacks in the neighbourhood were very troublesome and wild; and a rumour went abroad and reached Sydney that the Messres. O'Brien had been cruelly murdered by the aborigines. They were at the time located in the extreme borders of civilisation, and the rumour received ready credence. By accident the report that was abroad as to his own and his brother's death reached Mr. Cornelius O’Brien, and that gentleman immediately mounted his horse, and rode across the country nearly as far as Bathurst, where Mrs. O'Brien then resided, pushing his animal to the utmost in order to reach in time to allay the alarm and distress the false report would have created, supposing it to have travelled so far; and he had the satisfaction of arriving before, but on the very same day that the unfounded rumour of his murder reached the place. Mr. O'Brien leaves a widow, but no family. The Goulburn Herald and Chronicle (NSW : 1864 - 1881) Saturday 10 July 1869 p 3

Dapto's Mrs. Dan O'Brien, 95, Still Active
The deaths of such venerable residents of the district as Mr. John King, 94 and Miss Dennis, 92, have brought forth the information there is at least one older identity still survived and in; complete possession of all her faculties — Mrs. Dan O'Brien of Dapto aged 95 years. Mrs. O'Brien is a sister of the late Mr. John Burns, of Calderwood. The story is related in Dapto of how a citizen was called in to sign some paper for Mrs. 0’Brien in the later afternoon; without his spectacles- he was bearing the paper towards a window for better light when Mrs O’Brien queried, 'Can't you see?' With her finger she guided him where he had to attach his signature— a tribute to her really remarkable eye sight. Illawarra Daily Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1950 - 1954) Wednesday 7 June 1950 p 4
MRS. S. O'BRIEN The oldest resident of Dapto and a lifelong resident of that district, Mrs. Sarah O'Brien, passed away on August 21 at the age of 97 years and 10 months. The late Mrs. O'Brien, who resided at 91 Marshall Street, Dapto, was the widow of Mr. O'Brien who predeceased her thirty-six years ago, then leaving a family of fourteen. The surviving members of her family are Mary (Mrs. Fitzgerald, of Lidcombe), Jane (Mrs. Hassall, of Dapto), Ada (Mrs. Wotherspoon, of Lismore), Agnes, Dan and Leslie. She also leaves fifteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. Her late husband, five sons, and two daughters predeceased Mrs. Sarah O'Brien was born at Captain Hopkins' 'Benares' property, and, as a small girl, moved with her family to West Dapto. Her parents’ then moved to 'Calderwood' where they bought a free selection. The eldest daughter of Michael and Mary Burns, she was the sister of the late John Burns, of Albion Park. In 1877 she married Daniel O'Brien, of Dapto. Following the marriage, she and her husband settled at Avondale and there brought up the large family. The last 25 years of Mrs. O'Brien's life was spent at Dapto. , The late Mrs. O'Brien, always a hard worker, was held in high esteem by all who knew her. She was never happier than when she had her family with her and enjoyed thoroughly the large birthday parties given her in later years. Her passing severs a link with the early rural days of the Dapto district, and is regretted by the many who knew and respected her. The funeral left Dapto for the West Dapto cemetery. AN APPRECIATION
THE LATE MRS. ALICE B. C. ODONNELL
(By S. C. Rose)When the news spread on Friday I morning that Mrs. O'Donnell, of the post office, Unanderra, had passed away, a big wave of regret passed over many minds, accompanied -by a feeling of honour and appreciation. At such times it is not easy to find adequate words to express all one would wish because, now words seem so futile and are evasive. After a friendship exceeding forty years, an attempt may be made to express some appreciation of a good , mother, an excellent citizen, a splendid friend and a noble woman. I believe she spent all her life at Unanderra, and it was a life filled with kindly actions and helpful deeds. As postmistress at Unanderra, she succeeded her parents and carried out her duties in a very capable and efficient manner. The post office is by the side of the road and many a weak and weary traveller here met with help, sympathy and encouragement. Mrs. O'Donnell was of that type who ‘did good by stealth and blushed find it fame.' To all she was always courteous, kind and considerate. In every home wherever there was sickness and sorrow, there you would find Mrs. O'Donnell- a practical and liberal ministering angel. Though she had her own sorrows; yet I never heard her grumble or complain, but always found, her ready with the cheering word and helpful action. Her own trials were never allowed to interfere with her services to others, but were kept in the background.. She was never too busy to uplift, cheer and serve. The darkest, wettest night would never swerve her from the errand of mercy. Her personality was real and practical. She never fearsome of doing the right thing and standing up for a good cause Her sympathy for the weak and heavy laden was unbounded. She was president of the local Red Cross Branch and an officer of the P. &C. Association. Every patriotic movement had her loyal support and every worthy movement her heartfelt help. She was a wide and intelligent reader and had a decided literary gift. Those who were lucky to be among her correspondents enjoyed her clever and witty powers of expression. Mrs. O'Donnell was twice married. Her first husband was Mr. Muir, a clever Sydney solicitor. The offspring of this marriage were two boys who were brave and patriotic. The elder boy was named James. He entered the service of the Commercial Banking Company, and gave his life in defence of the bank's property at Gunnedah, when a robber tried to rob the bank and shot Jim The second boy, Frederick, had some training in military matters in Wollongong, and when the Great War broke out he volunteered for service and was given a commission. He saw service on Gallipoli, where he was fatally wounded by a sniper. Sometime after her first husband's death, Mrs. Muir married Mr. Richard O'Donnell, a member of a well-known family, esteemed and respected throughout beautiful Illawarra. One of the brothers was Mr. Frank O'Donnell, for several years Mayor of the Council of Central Illawarra. Mr. Mick O'Donnell was another brother, well and favourably known among the dairymen of Illawarra. By her second marriage there were two daughters, Kathleen and Betty. Both girls attended to their mother with loving care and thoughtfulness. They both showed proficiency in tennis, and Betty particularly had a State wide reputation for her skill at the game; Betty was recently appointed postmistress at Unanderra. Much sympathy is felt for the two young ladies in their irreparable loss, which they met so bravely, and carried on tenderly for their sick mother until her brave heart ceased to beat. The public attendance at the funeral on Friday afternoon was an eloquent testimony to the respect and esteem in which Mrs. O'Donnell was held by all classes of the community. Some journeyed a long way in order to be present at the funeral. It was interesting to note the flag at the council Chambers at half mast and also at the Public School, while the children from the school lined the road as the funeral passed on the way to the Berkeley Cemetery, where the interment took place. The Rev. Mr. Miliard, rector of the Parish, conducted the service and spoke with sympathy of the work, and influence of Mrs. O'Donnell. The Rev. T. Gee rector of the Dapto parish, also assisted with the service. Mrs. O'Donnell's memory will live in I many hearts and it is true as the poet has said, that 'to live in hearts we have left behind is not to die, and in this sense Mrs. O'Donnell is still will as. However, I can truthfully say that the world is the better for the life of Mrs. Alice Blanche Chester O'Donnell, and I am proud of the fact that my wife and self were privileged to call her friends and to revere her memory. Obituary. MRS. THOS. O'DWYER - 54 YEARS. Briefly, it was mentioned in inst. Saturday's “Independent'” that Mrs. Thos. O'Dwyer had passed away after a short illness of some three days at her home, “Allawah,” Dunmnore. The sad news was learned with district wide regret, and the very large attendance at the funeral and many beautiful flowers sent in sympathy for those bereaved and in remembrance evidenced the great esteem in which she was held. On Saturday afternoon the interment took place in the Shellharbour cemetery, the cortege leaving the home at 1.30 p.m. The burial service was con- ducted by the Rev. Father O'Farrell, of Shellharbour and Albion Park, assisted by the Rev. Father M. P. Malone, of Kiama. Two sons in Messrs. Leo and Jack O'Dwyer, Messrs. Martin (nephews) and Messrs. Joe and Loy Marley were pall bearers. The late Mrs. O'Dwyer had a beautiful nature and was a friend and neighbour in the kindliest sense of the words. At any hour of the day or night she was ready to respond to the call of sickness, to sit up with a friend, or to watch with them beside a sick bed. She had known what illness was herself and her heart was tender, her hands helpful when it came to others. A happy nature was hers also, her smile and welcome spontaneous and sincere and besides the home circle that mourns her so deeply, many friends in the district in which she was born, sorrow at her departure from this life in the prime of womanhood, for she rejoiced in the joys of her friends, and was keenly interested in all that mattered to her family, who found in her a companion and friend as well as a dev0ted mother. To Mr. Thomas O'Dwyer, bereft of a beloved helpmate, deep sympathy goes out; to Mr. Leo O'Dwyer deservedly popular in Kiama through his interest in sport and likeable nature, it is also extended, and to Mr. Jack O'Dwyer, well-known in the football field; also to Miss Mary O'Dwyer, her mother's companion and helper, who yet finds time to do so much in organisation for church and charitable functions. Other children are Mr. Irvine O'Dwyer, of Albion Park, Mrs. Carroll (Nellie), of Albion Park, and Misses Kathleen and Grace (twins), to each and all district sympathy is extended. Also to her sister (Katherine) and brother-in-law, Mrs. and Mr. Leo O'Dwyer, who too are residents of Dunmore. The late Mrs. O'Dwyer was Miss Ellen Martin, and a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Irvine Martin, well- known and respected residents of Shellharbour for many years. Another sister (Mary) is Mrs. Patrick O'Dwyer, of Coniston, Wollongong. Three of Mr. and Mrs. Martin's daughters married sons of the late Mr. and Mrs. O'Dwyer, of Shellharbour. Four brothers survive her, in Messrs. James, John and Joseph Martin, of Dunmore, and Mr. Irvine Martin, of Dorrigo, to whom condolence is also extended. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. O'Dwyer went to reside in Foxground and found a niche in the heart of the good folk there, by their kindly deeds and neighbourly ways and warm hearted friendships. They resided there for some nine years farming first at “Golden Gully” and later at “Melrose,” removing from there in November, 1917. On January 1st, 1918, they took over the farm occupied for many years by the late Mr. George Couch. On leaving they were given a great send-off and many good wishes were expressed for happiness and prosperity at Dunmore with- in their old home district. Therefore, at Gerringong and at Foxground, deep regret will also be expressed that such a Christian soul, good neighbour and generous friend has passed away, but the memory of the qualities that made her such, will live long after her. John Looney and Henry Gallagher were charged with that they did, on the 25th instant, assault Bridget O Hara, with intent. Mr. Russell for defendants.
Constable Streatfield deposed : At about half past 10 o'clock last night, from information received, I went in company with Constable Arthur in the direction of the gas works, when near Smith-street I heard a smothered scream; the voice appeared as if the person was choking; I heard a man's voice say, 'Hold your tongue'- I know defendant Looney well, and believe it was his voice ; the screams continued, and we ran at full speed, and found a woman named O'Hara lying in an open paddock off Smith street, the two defendants being there also, Gallagher holding her down, whilst Looney was committing the offence. (The evidence at this stage was unfit for publication.) The woman was much exhausted, and could scarcely speak; she was the worse of liquor, and much excited ; defendants had no time to run, for we were right on to them before they were aware of it ; we arrested them at once ; I asked Looney what he was doing with the woman, and if he knew who she was ; he replied that she was a stranger, and that they were trying to got her home; Gallagher also said they had never seen her before in their lives, that they were only trying to get her home, Constable Arthur said it was strange they should see the woman home when they did not know who she was, or where she was living ; Gallagher said that was nothing we took defendants to the lock-up, and on searching Gallagher found a bottle containing rum ; we then went back for the woman, and took her to the lock-up in a blanket ; she was much exhausted.
Constable Arthur gave corroborative evidence.
William Gow gave evidence to the effect that he saw two men and a woman lying in a paddock off Smith-street; the woman was groaning, and he had no doubt the men were abusing her.
Bridget O'Hara deposed : I am the wife of Michael O'Hara, and reside at Mount Keira; am 50 years of age ; I was in Wollongong yesterday, and got a little too much to drink ; I remember starting to go home with Mrs. Rowles from O'Brien's hotel ; I went to go home by the tramline, and don't remember anything else; I saw the two defendants in O'Brien's about 4 or 5 o'clock I started home about dark ; I have known both defendants from their childhood; Gallagher was reared within a stone's throw of my place ; they know me well; I don't remember anything from the time I got into the paddock ; I came to my senses this morning in the police station.
Michael O'Brien, licensee of the Royal Alfred hotel, deposed that the woman O'Hara was at his hotel at 6 o'clock in the evening, when he told her to go home, and she did so, leaving with Mrs. Rowles; both defendants were at the hotel when she left, and for some time after. Dr. Thompson deposed to having examined the woman O'Hara, and finding that she had been interfered with. In reply to the usual questions, Looney said he, was not guilty, and Gallagher said he knew the woman, and was going to take her home. Defendants were committed to take their trial at the next Court of Quarter Sessions, to be hold on the 17th August, bail allowed, each in £10,0, and two sureties in £50 each. DEATH.
MRS. MARGARET O'KEEFE. On Friday evening last, at the residence of her grand-daughter (Mrs. T. Whalan, Jamberoo), there passed away one of the oldest residents of Jamberoo, in the person of Mrs. Margaret O'Keefe, relict of the late Mr. Cornelius O'Keefe, who predeceased her about five years ago. The late Mrs. O'Keefe was a native of County Water ford, Ireland, and arrived in New South Wales about the year 1850, settling shortly afterwards at Jamberoo, being amongst the earliest settlers and tenants of the late Mr. Alick Osborne, on whose land at Wallaby Hill she resided until long after it was sold, which practically meant about sixty years' residence on one farm. Her kindly disposition, besides her thought for others, was well known. The funeral took place on Sunday, a large number of residents paying the last tribute of respect by following the mortal remains to the Catholic cemetery adjoining the church, where deceased expressed a desire to be buried beside her late husband. Prior to the interment a service was held in the church by Rev. Father Malone, who made feeling reference to the deceased lady and the good life she had lived, and for the example she showed to others by her regular attendance and attachment to her church. During the deceased's illness, which was only of a few weeks duration, she was attended by Dr. Fox, who did all he could to relieve her suffering, and she received careful nursing from her daughter (Mrs. Hudson), and grand- daughter (Mrs. Whalan), assisted by kind friends to whom deceased was much attached during her life. She leaves to mourn her, a large family and many descendants. The Kiama Independent, and Shoalhaven Advertiser (NSW : 1863 - 1947) Wednesday 4 June 1913 p 2

THE LATE MRS. FRANK O'KEEFE As briefly mentioned in a recent issue, on Sunday evening 29th May, at about six o'clock, Mrs. Frank O'Keefe passed away at her late residence, “Mount Allowrie,” Jamberoo, at the age of 67 years, after an illness of twelve months' duration. The deceased lady was a native of Cork, Ireland. She came to the colony as a young woman, married, and, for 49 years lived in the South Coast district. She leaves a family of thirteen children (5 sons and 8 daughters), 12 of whom were at the funeral. She had 41 grandchildren, all of whom are living. The Rev. Father Sheridan conducted the funeral obsequies, and a very large number of people followed the remains of the deceased mournfully to the cemetery. It is about fifteen months since deceased's husband died. Heart- felt sorrow is felt for the bereaved family, several members of whom are well known, occupying, as they do, prominent positions in connection with South Coast Milk and Butter Companies. AN AFFILATION CASE. Eliza Eggleston, a single woman, residing at Shellharbor, proceeded against William Cochrane, of Bega, for the maintenance of an illegitimate child, Mr, T. J. Butler appeared on behalf of complainant, and Mr. O.O Russell for the defendant, who repudiated the claim brought against him, Eliza Eggleston deposed that the child was born in the month of October, 1896, while she was an innate of the Benevolent Asylum, Sydney. William Cochrane, the defendant, was the father of the child. They had both been in the employ of Mr, Thomas James, farmer, Shellharbour, and had been alone in Mrs. James' bedroom at the beginning of the year 1896. Defendant left about 2 months after the new year and witness left in April of that year. She was in the Sydney Benevolent Asylum for a period of 14 months and only returned to the district some four weeks ago. She claimed 10s week for the support of the child, In answer to Mr. Russell, witness said that defendant Ieft Mr. James soon after he learned that witness was ecinate. Witness had give birth to another child, which was now 18 years of age. Defendant was not the father of this child. She had told defendant of her condition, before he left Mr. James. He asked her not to say anything about it to his sister, and said he would give her some money that night- that he would settle the matter, he had never given her a penny. There was no sum of money named between them, neither £20 nor £10. She did not tell him that if he gave her, a sum of money she would blame it on some other man, he had never had any dealings with other men between the birth of her first and second children; neither at, Mr. James' place nor anywhere else. She knew a man named Bill Barrett, who was employed by Mr. James, but she had at no time gone further than to speak to him.
By Mr. Butler’s, Defendant promised to marry me, but never fulfilled his promise.
Charles Wilson, residing at Shellharbor, who was called on complainant’s behalf, denied having once said that defendant had told him the child was his, and that he could afford to keep it. He had not had any conversation with defendant about the case. Defendant denied being the father of the child. He gave evidence to the effect that he had been engaged with complainant at Mr. James' place, Shellharbour, as stated; he bud never asked complainant to refrain from telling his sister about her condition but when complainant had come to him and spoke to him about it he himself went aril told his sister all about it. When complainant came to him about the subject he told her that he would not settle with her that he would not Consent to be defrauded, She proposed to him to pay her £20, and she would then endeavour to fasten the child to some other man. He had never been in Mr. James' bedroom and could not remember, over, having been alone with the complainant in his life, he never told anyone the child was his, or that he could support it. He disowned the child altogether. He had spoken to Charles Wilson that day, but all he said to him was; “speak the truth,” The Bench decided to dismiss the case, without costs. Late Mrs. O'Neill
Mrs. Annie O'Neill, relict of the late Edward O'Neill (for many years manager of the P.D.S. branch at Wollongong) died at her home, 48 Auburn street, on Tuesday afternoon, aged 74 years.
Her passing removes one of Nature's gentlewomen. For very many years the family resided at Mount Keira, where the deceased lady by her self-sacrifice and goodwill towards others, left a name which the generations of time will never efface a name which will forever stand out as a shining example to others.
The cricketers, the footballers and every organisation at Mount Keira will not readily forget her activities and good deeds on their behalf. About 19 years ago the family came to Wollongong to reside, and as Mrs. O'Neill was a woman imbued with the true ideals of motherhood, she devoted the greater part of her time to the well-being of her late husband (who died a little over two years ago) and her children, the fruits of which are so outstanding in her family. The daughters are Alice, Evelyn (Mrs. M. Tubman), Phyllis (Mrs. A. McMahon) and Meryl (Mrs. G. Curtis); the sons are Hubert (Bert), Harry, Norman, and Archie. Mrs. O'Neill took an active interest in the Catholic Church being consistent in her support and assiduous in her attention to the means of spiritual grace. As a neighbour, knowing full well the ways of human nature, hers was a disposition that sought the good and overlooked the evil. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery on Wednesday, alongside those of her husband. The cortege moved first to the Catholic Church where a short but impressive service was conducted. Silent goodwill towards the sterling worth of deceased was also expressed by the large number of beautiful wreaths. South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus (NSW : 1900 - 1954) Friday 17 May 1935 p 10

THE LATE MRS. TIMOTHY O'NEIL.
As briefly noticed in this journal last week, the late Mrs. T. O'Neil passed away at her residence on the Berkeley Estate on June 21st, in her 96th year, she having been for 61 years a resident of Illawarra. The deceased lady, with her husband and family arrived in the colony in 1838, and Mr, O'Neil almost immediately entered upon farming pursuits at Fairy Meadow. Soon after wards the fine Berkeley property, then in its primitive state, having been thrown open for lease upon advantageous terms, Mr. O'Neil (who entered upon his long rest some 28 years ago) became the tenant of the farm immediately on the south aide of Allen's Creek and to which the present bridge gives access. Industry and frugality not only enabled the thrifty couple to provide for a large family, but also to lay aside something for a rainy day, At the sale of the Berkeley Estate the late Mrs. O'Neil became the cash purchaser of the farm known as Madden's, beautifully situated on Berkeley Heights. Surviving the deceased lady are two sons and five daughters, who are very comfortably circumstanced. Even to the good old lady's last days, although a failing in her intellect to some extent was perceptible, an unbounded kindness and desire to be hospitable remained — qualities which had been prominent characteristics of her whole life. On the 16th August 1861 William Henry Organ's wife Ann left her husband, and on the same day he published a notice in the Illawarra Mercury disowning any of her debts. On Monday 26th August, she took him to Wollongong Court of Petty Sessions and the case was reported in the Illawarra Mercury:
“Mrs Ann Organ appeared against her husband for the purpose of obtaining an order from the Court for a separate maintenance. Mrs Organ, being sworn, deposed that she was married to defendant [William Henry Organ] on the 3rd January, 1855, but that she left her husband's roof about 10 days since owing to his threatening to do her some grievous bodily harm. She had made an application to him for a maintenance but had received no reply from him. Her husband was a small storekeeper [at Bulli] and doing a small business. He professed to own the property on which he lived, but it belonged to his father; he, however, lived rent free. She had taken a house in Corrimal Street and intended to carry on the millinery and dressmaking business. When she separated from her husband he had agreed to let her have her wearing apparel, and half the furniture, together with the millinery goods. He had also promised to let her have half the rents of the small cottages which were on the farm, the rents of which amounted to 12/- per week; and he had further promised her £5 to give her a start. He had given her £ 2 in part payment, but had afterwards taken the money back again as he wanted to pay for some goods that he had bought in Sydney. Mrs Organ had 3 children to support, the eldest being 5 years old and the youngest nearly 18 months [Ann was also 6 months pregnant at the time]
Elizabeth Lynch stated that she had lived with the couple at Bulli and now lived with Ann Organ in Corrimal Street. She had known unpleasantness to occur between her master and mistress on several occasions. She was present when an agreement was come to that they should separate.
Walter Duglan was called and examined by William Henry Organ. He admitted that he had seen Mr Organ shake his wife on one occasion when labouring under provocation. The provocation consisted in Mrs Organ's refusal to give Mr Organ money to purchase some things in town. The Witness on several occasions had heard cries of murder! coming from Mrs Organ, but did not know what they were caused by. When the boxes [with Ann's belongings] were brought from Bulli, William Henry had protested against it.
In arriving at a decision the Bench said that the case was a painful one; as, however, the balance of testimony was in favour of the wife, they would make an order for the payment of 5/- a week for six months.

The Late Mrs. George Organ.
This lady, who had reached well into the eighty fifth year of her age, and had resided about three-fourths of her life time in Wollongong, passed away to the life hereafter on Saturday morning last. Advanced though she was in years, she continued with few intermissions, fairly strong and active until within the last few months, when prostration overcame her, and she gradually succumbed to decay of nature. Although rarely heard of in public, she was one of the truly noble of the earth, all the elements of a true woman and humble and devoted Christian being happily blended in her nature and manifested in her everyday life. Of numberless good actions on her part from time to time, perhaps the only one which she was unable to carry out on the principle of the left hand not knowing what the right hand did, as was her practice and desire, was the granting by her of a beautiful piece of land for a site for the Bulli Hospital. Her husband (the late Mr. George Organ), who was a well-known resident of Wollongong for many years, preceded her to the grave in 1889, but she leaves a son\ and daughter, also several grand-children and great grandchildren.
Her daughter (Mrs. James Rixon) and some of her granddaughters attended to her faithfully and devotedly during the last years of her life, as so loving and worthy a spirit richly deserved at their hands. The remains of the deceased lady were interred in the Congregational Cemetery on Sun- day afternoon, the Rev. A. T. Miles officiating at the grave. A goodly number attended the funeral. In consequence of there having been no means of advertising the event, many town residents even were not aware of the death until after the burial had actually taken place. Mrs. Elizabeth Orphin. — Mrs. Orphin, who has been previously mentioned as a pioneer, was not born in Illawarra, but arrived here when she was 13 years of age. Her arrival in Illawarra was fixed firmly in her mind, it being just three weeks before the wreck of the 'Dunbar.' Her father came to Illawarra under engagement to Mr. Thackeray, who was employed building the Wollongong Court House and gaol. The Court House was situated near the wharf. Mrs Orphin is a first cousin of the late John Payne, of the past pioneers of the district. Mrs. Orphin has a clear memory of the old Church of England, which was situated in Corrimal Street, opposite to the present Bowling Green. She also remembers the building of the Temperance Hall, which was next to the present Oxford Hotel. The present Church of England was built by Patrick Lahiff as stonemason, and her husband — James Orphin — was the carpenter on the job. She is able to remember quite clearly the bullock teams in Wollongong and the coal going through the main street to the wharf. Her first place of residence in Wollongong was in Lower Crown Street, near the Catholic Church. Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950) Friday 16 May 1924 p 1

MORNINGTON V. MORNINGTON.
Mr. Ralston appeared for the petitioner, Agnes Mornington, who sought to obtain a dissolution of her marriage with John Mornington on the ground of desertion for three years and upwards. The respondent was not represented. The parties had been married on the 8th October, 1884, at Coolangatta. The petitioner deposed that her husband had been an engine-driver, and she had lived with him for three or four months. He had left her in January, 1885, and since then she had lived with her parents. His Honor granted the decree nisi, to be made absolute in one month.
HER SECOND EXPERIENCE.
Agnes Orr, formerly Mornington, petitioned for a dissolution of her marriage, with Sidney Byron Orr, on the ground of desertion. The petitioner, for whom Mr.Taylor appeared, deposed to having married the respondent who said he was an engineer, in May, 1300, at a private house in Newtown. They were married by the Rev. George Hay. Mr. Taylor: What was your position in life before you married me the respondent? — How do you mean? Well, were you a spinster? The petitioner smiled, and said, 'Oh, no; I had divorced my husband.' 'This is your second experience?' observed the attorney. 'And now,' said his Honor, 'you want to get another divorce?' The petitioner replied in, the affirmative. When did you get the other divorce?' pursued his Honor. 'In .1893,' was the answer? What was it for? — Desertion. . And this is for desertion? Yes
The petitioner proceeded to say that her husband had a bicycle business in King street, Newtown, for nine months and then he became the licensee of a hotel of in Regent-street, Redfern. Three months later he bought another hotel business at Dowling-street, Moore Park. That was in June, 1902. In November of that year he said he would like to go to South Africa, as 'he was not doing anything at the time. His Honor: How were you living?— Well, we had a room from mother.
Petitioner further stated her husband told her that if he got work in South Africa he would send for her. He was away for three months, and he then started another bicycle business at Enmore . A couple of years later he again told her he was going to South Africa. .He went away and she hadn’t seen him since. A decree nisi was granted, to be moved absolute in six months. THE LATE MRS OSBORNE.
As briefly noticed in Saturday's issue, Mrs. Eliza Osborne, the good hostess of the Commercial Hotel in this town for so many years, passed away on Thursday morning last. For half a century or there-abouts, the deceased lady was a well-known figure in Wollongong, and was as thoroughly respected as she was widely known. Nor was the esteem in which she was held by all who know her undeserved, she being as good-hearted, generous and kind as man or woman well could be. Her cheerful face, hearty laugh, and generous hand ever cast a friendly influence round her, and never did want appeal in vain to her for assistance. Her only fault in that respect, if fault it could properly be termed, was that she was too generous whenever distress or want of necessities of life came under her notice. She was never so happy as when she thought she was making others happy, however much it might be costing her to do so. And her experience in this district was as varied as her good name was established beyond question. Illawarra, as a settlement, was practically in its infancy when as a young woman she cast in her lot here with her husband, the late Mr. Robert Osborne, whom she survived about thirty years. A native of the North of Ireland, she brought with her to this colony in a marked degree all the splendid qualities of the people of that part of the old country. Like most of the pioneers of colonization here, she was just the person required under the circumstances, and right worthily did she act her part in the arena of the new world. She saw the town of Wollongong arise shortly from the primeval bush, and assume the forms of civilization in streets and stately buildings. In her first experience here the country south and north of the site of the town was being cleared and brought under cultivation. She saw the wheat, corn, and potato-growing days in Illawarra in all their palmy productiveness, and witnessed their passing away and merging into the dairying era, until quite a new order of things prevailed in those respects. Her first experience in this district was long before the very mention of coal or coal trade. In her early years in Illawarra it would have been as foreign for people to discuss the subjects of coal, coal-miners, and miners' unions as now it would be to talk about the characteristics of the South Pole. Yet she saw the coal industry started in the district, and lived to observe its expansion to the grand and rapidly increasing proportions it now assumes. Very much more, and of an exceedingly interesting character might be written concerning the half-century experience of the late Mrs. Osborne in Wollongong. But suffice it to say that in the midst of all the changes that occurred during her residence here, no change ever took place in the genial nature and conduct of the woman herself. At all times and under all circumstances she was the same kind and hospitable individual. And that she was as good in the way of example as by precept has been more than amply manifested by the bearing and conduct of those brought up under her care and roof. By all of those she was beloved and venerated in the deepest sense. Of late years she had passed the business of the Commercial over to her popular relative, Mr. George Cochrane, who with his amiable wife tenderly cared for the deceased in her last short illness. But as she lived so she died, without much trouble to anyone. Though failing in health with advanced years, she was able to go about until within a few days of her death, which she yielded to with the strong Christian characteristic that pervaded her whole life. Her age was 76 years. Although there was no means of giving general publicity to the circumstance, the funeral on Friday was largely attended. The remains were interred in the Wesleyan cemetery beside those of her late husband ; the Rev. R. H. Waugh officiating in the absence of the Rev. B. J. Meek from the district. Weddings
A very pretty wedding took place at St. John's, Darlinghurst, on August 26, between Mr. Harry M. Osborne, of Kangaroo Valley, and Miss Lucy Beatrice Dangar, daughter of the Hon. H. C. And Mrs. Dangar. The church was beautifully decorated, and the ceremony was performed by the Rev. Canon Pain, assisted by the Revs. J. H. Muzy and E. Lampard. The bride wore a handsome trained gown of white satin duchesse trimmed with chiffon and pearl passementerie, and a veil of Honiton lace over a coronet of orange blossoms. Her five bridesmaids were the Misses Ellie, Ruth, Nora, and Muriel. Dangar (her sisters), and Miss M. Osborne (sister of the bride groom), who were all dressed alike in pretty dresses of cream crepe de chine, trimmed with, apple green and pale pink silk, green fancy straw hats with pink roses, pink and green chiffon, and ivy leaves. After the service the relations and intimate friends of the family were entertained at Grantham, and later in the afternoon the newly-married pair left for their honeymoon, the bride wearing a tailor-made coat and skirt of light brown, and a cream straw hat. DEATH OF MRS. ROBERT OSWALD.
It will be learned with regret that Mrs. Robert Oswald succumbed on Sunday to an attack of apoplexy at her residence, Bourke-street, Wollongong. She suffered a first attack on Friday week, and the final one about seven o'clock on Sunday morning, after which she lingered un conscious till about two o'clock in the afternoon. Dr. Wade, who attended her, stated that a blood-vessel on the brain had burst. The deceased lady was 40 years of age. She was born in Birmingham, England, and came to Australia with her parents in 1853, being then 12 months old. Of the seven children she leaves behind the youngest is four years old and the eldest 15 years of age. She has lived a very quiet- life, but has always been highly respected by all who know her. The deceased lady is a daughter of Mr. Thomas Collins, watchmaker, of Corrimal street, her two surviving sisters being Mrs. James Rathmell and Mrs. Parsons (wife of the Rev. A. Parsons, a native of Wollongong, but now of St. Peter's, Newtown, Sydney). Mrs. Oswald's remains will be interred in the Church of England Cemetery this afternoon. THE LATE MRS. OSWALD.
The late Mrs. Oswald, who died at Clifton on Monday evening, genuinely regretted by a large number of friends, was an old resident of Illawarra. She was born at Barnard Castle, Durham, England, in 1829, and arrived in the colony about 33 years ago, settling In Illawarra 10 years afterwards. She had resided at Clifton for 18 years. Her husband, Mr. Thomas Oswald, mine manager, died many years ago. For three years before her death she suffered acutely from weakness of the heart's action, but at last the end came and she died peacefully. She leaves four sons and two daughters, who feel their loss keenly, the deceased lady having been a loving mother, upright, pious and chartable. The remains were conveyed by train on Wednesday and interred beside those of her husband and grandchild in the old C.E. Cemetery at Wollongong, the last sad rites being per formed by Rev. H. W. Taylor, the deceased’s late pastor, who returned from Sydney at some inconvenience to conduct the service. The funeral was attended by many old residents of Illawarra. MRS.-ELIZABETH O'TOOLE-79 Years Many of the older residents of Kiama regretted to hear of the death of Mrs. Elizabeth O’Toole which occurred on Friday last at her sister's residence at Petersham, at the age of 79. She was the second daughter of the late Joseph and Sarah Coombs, and was born at Gerringong, later coming to Kiama where her parents had resided for some time. She married the late James O'Toole and lived here for many years, being well-known and highly respected by all who knew her. No more kind-hearted personality could be found than Mrs. O'Toole, and many were her acts of kindness as a neighbour and friend. Her greatest interests centred in her home, where she brought up a large family and was a wonderful wife and mother, her care and attention being repaid by the love and affection of her children. Mrs. O'Toole carried on a refreshment room in Terralong Street, where Jones' newsagency is now established. About that time she lost her youngest daughter, Leila, who had been a great help in the business, and the death of this Beautiful girl was a great shock to her mother and the members of the family. They shortly after removed from Kiama, but for Mrs. O'Toole the old district she loved so well still had a great attraction and she occasionally visited her daughter, Mrs. Quinn, while the latter still lived here. She is survived by three sons, Messrs. Fred (Denman), James (Leichhardt) and Albert (Five Dock) and three daughters, Emily (Mrs. E. Jones, Five Dock), Annie (Mrs. H. Minter, Rams gate) and Elizabeth (Mrs. M. Quinn, Wollongong). LAUGHED AND DANCED PAST.
Sydney William Owen petitioned, before Mr. Justice Simpson, of a dissolution of his marriage with Beatrice Mary Owen, formerly Mitchison, on the ground of her adultery with Alfred Weeks, who was joined a co-respondent. Mr. Fanke appeared for the petitioner; and Mr. Bignold and Mr Hodgson, for the co-respondent.. There was no appearance of the respondent. On behalf of the co-respondent the issues raised were 'Whether the petitioner, deserted or wilfully, separated himself from the respondent, before the adultery (if any), and whether he was guilty of such wilful neglect or misconduct as conduced to the alleged adultery.
The petitioner, deposed to having married-the respondent; in June, 1902, at Wickham according to the Anglican rites. He was mining-at the time. They lived at Carrington for three or four weeks, and then they went to Helensburgh. In 1904 he left for New Zealand, having previously got the consent of his wife, who was with her sister at Warialda. A couple of months after he arrived in New Zealand he obtained employment, and wrote to his wife, and sent her money. He continued to send her money until he heard something, and then he ceased. After March, 1905, he was out of work for some weeks. He left New Zealand in June last, and a week after he returned his wife sued him for -maintenance, but the case was dismissed. In answer, to his Honor, the petitioner - said he only knew the co-respondent by sight. He understood he was a miner. About a month -after his return from New Zealand, petitioner said, he saw his wife in Helensburgh - in the street, but 'she wouldn't speak to him, - A week after he came back he saw her at a dance with the correspondent. Petitioner was at the dance with his sister-in-law. When the respondent and co-respondent danced past him they laughed, but didn't speak. He had seen them, arm in arm going into Weeks' house at 11 o'clock at night, and he had also seen them walking arm in arm. Mary Jane Owen, mother of the petitioner, said that during her son's absence in New Zealand she had seen the respondent and co respondent walking arm-in-arm, after dark. Florence Jeffrey, a married woman, residing at Helensburgh, said she had seen the respondent and co-respondent in the street together and at the dance room. On one occasion the respondent said that Weeks was going to take her to Africa, and that he had bought her a pink dress to go to a ball in. She also mentioned something to witness about .she would sooner kiss Weeks than her husband.
In answer to Mr. Hodgson, witness said they frequently had dances at Helensburgh, and at one of them Weeks played the piano.
This closed the case for the petitioner.
Mr. Hodgson did not propose to call evidence.
His Honor found that adultery had been committed between the respondent and the co respondent, but reserved his decision upon issues raised by the co-respondent. Evening News (Sydney, NSW : 1869 - 1931) Thursday 5 December 1907 p 8

FEAR OF A HUSBAND.
Peter Owens, a fireman, 50, was charged at the Water Police Court to-day with maliciously breaking a pane of glass at 225 Forbes Street.
Owens looked a bit of a wreck as he rose in the dock; his nose was covered with scars, and his face looked as if it had been very roughly handled.
In answer to the charge, he said that he was sitting on the window-sill of the' house in question, where his wife resided, last night, and on trying to jump off he inadvertently pushed his elbow through the window, but he had no malicious intent whatever.
Julia Owens said she was the wife of the accused, and already had a judge's order against him. He had led her such a life that she was forced to move from' place to place to escape from him. She had not seen him for eighteen months until last Sunday , morning he found out her present address, and appeared in front of the house in a very intoxicated condition, and cursed and swore, in a terrible, manner. He then came, to the front door and thumped on it tor twenty minutes, She became so alarmed that she sent her youngest daughter off for a policeman, and while the girl was away on this errand, the accused, receiving no answer to. His attack on the door, pulled back the shutter of a window, and broke the glass with his fist.
The accused reiterated .his ' former statement, adding that the. protecutrjx's 'son knocked him down and kicked him; but the magistrate believed his wife's description of the affair, and fined Owens 10s, ordered him to pay the damage (2s fid), or go to gaol for seven days. Cause of Death: syncope following childbirth
1903 Electoral roll –living at Keiraville Domestic Duties. Husband a miner.
A Sudden Death.
On Tuesday evening Mrs. Oxman, wife of Mr. W. Oxman, of Keiraville, died rather suddenly. She had given birth to a son -about half-past four in the afternoon. Everything was proceeding very satisfactorily, but some three hours later she quietly passed away.
A magisterial enquiry was hold at the courthouse on Wednesday afternoon before the P.M. The evidence showed that the deceased, Mary Ellen Oxman was 31 years of age, and had left five children, the eldest being 12 years. The deceased was confined of a child about 4.30 on the afternoon of Tuesday, she being attended to by Miss Charlotte Williams, a certificated nurse. After the birth of the child the patient progressed very satisfactorily for some three or four hours. The nurse was out preparing some gruel for the deceased, and on her return to the room noticed that a change had come over the patient. She refused the gruel, shaking her head, and immediately collapsed without speaking. A stimulant was at once given, and Dr. Kerr sent for. On arrival he pronounced that the deceased appeared to have been properly attended to, and stated that sudden death would be caused by syncope or embolism, or thrombosis of the pulmonary artery, and in this case, in his opinion, death was due to one of these causes. He had had experience with Nurse Williams, who was a competent midwifery nurse and familiar with her duties. The P.M. found that the deceased died from natural causes, to wit, syncope following childbirth. The funeral took place on Thursday after noon, and was largely attended, Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950) Saturday 7 May 1904 p 2
