Husband a pork butcher

Burnt to Death.

A man named Richard Simpson, aged 37 years, died in the Sydney Hospital during Saturday night from the effects of burns received the same evening at his residence in Spring-street, Waverley. Deceased arrived home at about 8 o'clock, and lay down on the hearth near the fireplace in the dining-room. His wife gave him some bed-clothes and allowed him to lay there. About 9.30 he awoke and called his wife to light the fire. She did so, and then went upstairs to do some sewing.

About half an hour later she heard her husband call out 'fire;' and, on rushing to the room, found him enveloped in flames, which were, how-ever, soon extinguished. Simpson, who was badly burnt about the body, was taken to the Sydney Hospital, where he was admitted, and died a few hours later. Evening News (Sydney, NSW : 1869 - 1931) Monday 21 March 1892 p 3

On Thursday afternoon the death occurred at her residence, Kembla Street, of Mrs. Vale, wife of Mr. Thos E. Vale, Mrs. Vale had been a resident of Wollongong for about eleven years, and by her kindly nature had made many friends that today mourn the loss of a kind friend. We sympathise with Mr. Vale in his sad loss. Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950) Friday 12 March 1915 Page 2

VALE.—In sad but loving memory of our clear mother, Maria Ann Vale, who departed this life March 11, 1915, at her residence, Crown street, Wollongong, N.S. Wales.

A precious one from us is gone,
A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can he filled.
When alone in our sorrow,
Bitter tears How unknown to the world ;
Mother stands by our side;
And whispers the words, Death cannot divide.

Inserted by her loving sons and daughter, Charles, Thomas, and Mary Ann Simpson.

On the 17th March, at the residence of the bride's father, by the Rev. J. Howes, Wesleyan minister, John James, second son of Mr. Joseph Vance, to Mary Jane, oldest daughter of Thomas G. Hird, Esq , teacher of the Public School, Kangaroo Valley. Australian Town and Country Journal (NSW : 1870 - 1907) Saturday 13 April 1872

Mary Jane Vance was born on board ship, Bass Straits, in the year 1849. She was the child of godly parents, and in early years received religious impressions that materially helped in moulding her character, At the age of 21 years she gave her heart to God, under a sermon preached by the late Rev. W. Hill, at Blayney. In the year 1872 she was married to Mr. John Vance, and for 29 years proved a true help-mate to her husband. Her influence in her home was as ointment poured forth. After various removals Mr. Vance finally settled at Rooty Hill, in the Penrith Circuit. At once Mrs. Vance connected herself with the Wesleyan Church at Mount Druitt, and for 15 years was a most earnest and devoted worker.

Whatever was assigned her to do, was undertaken cheerfully and willingly.

For many years she collected for the quarterly meeting. Although living some .distance from the church, her seat was seldom vacant, and then only through unavoidable causes.

She loved the House of God, and the ministry of the Word. In the class meeting her testimony was always clear and definite. Her spiritual life… The Methodist (Sydney, NSW : 1892 - 1954) Saturday 25 January 1902 p 8

MRS. JAMES VEREKER.

General regret was expressed in Wollongong and Dapto on Tuesday morning, when it was Mrs .James Vereker had passed away at her home, Corrimal Street, Wollongong, the previous night. The late Mrs. .Vereker was a native of Marshall Mount, and was a daughter of the late Mr. and .Mrs. C. Heininger, who did their part in the pioneering of the district. When Mrs. Vereker was married to Mr. James Vereker — then on the staff of the Smelting Works at Dapto — it was one of the popular events of that time, as the bride was respected by all. Later, when Mr. Vereker entered into the butchering business at Corrimal, she was a great help to her husband, and later at Wollongong. Being of a kindly and charitable nature, Mrs. Vereker won many friends, a great number friends of whom will miss her. Although a great sufferer for a considerable time, she was always bright and cheerful. The large number that followed the remains to their last resting place on Wednesday afternoon testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held. From the home, the remains were taken to St. Francis Xavier's R.C. Church, where an impressive service was conducted by the Rev. Father Doherty, and thence to the Catholic cemetery at Wollongong. A husband and four daughters and four sons are left to mourn the loss of a loving wife and devoted mother. We extend our sympathy ,to the bereaved. Vidler v Vidler

Application was made to the Registrar in Divorce on Thursday, by Edith Maud Vidler, of Wellington, for the payment of alimony by her husband, Stephen Emerson Vidler, storekeeper, of Blayney, against whom she has filed a petition, for a 'judicial separation.

The parties were married at Stanmore, on 1 August 10, 1912, according to the rites of the Methodist Church, and there are four children of the union. The petitioner, was born at Oberon and the respondent at Jamberoo. The ground for the suit is alleged cruelty on the part of the husband.

The respondent has entered an appearance, and he denies the petitioner's allegations of cruelty.-

Mrs. Vidler stated in her affidavits that her husband agreed to allow her £8 a week, as from June, 1928, but this sum was subsequently reduced to £6, and recently he offered her only £3/10. She had refused to accept this amount and was now desirous that the Court should fix the amount. Wellington Times (NSW : 1899 - 1954) Monday 5 December 1932 Page 4

MRS. E. J. VIDLER-77 YEARS

The death occurred in Kiama District Hospital on Sunday, 12th June, of Mrs. Eliza Jane Vidler, of Jamberoo at the age of 77 years.

Mrs. Vidler, who was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Frank Harris, had not enjoyed the best of health in recent years and during the past 12 months had spent a good deal of time in hospital. Her main interest was in her home, where she had a beautiful garden with a vast assortment of botanical specimens.

She was a very good neighbour and was always ready to help, particularly in case of sickness.

She is survived by her husband Mr. George Stephen Vidler, two sons, Clement, of Bexhill, Richmond River, Harold (Queensland) and one daughter May (Mrs. Williams, of Windsor). One son Cecil predeceased her.

The funeral left the Methodist Church, Jamberoo, on Tuesday, 14th for the Jamberoo Cemetery. Rev. R. C. Clark officiated. Kiama Independent (NSW : 1947 - 1954) Saturday 25 June 1949 p 3

On Friday morning the death occurred at Jamberoo of Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Vidler, widow of the late Joseph Vidler, of 'Old Place,' who predeceased her some 25 years ago.

Both were of pioneer stock, and pillars of the Methodist Church, and Christians who set an example for many to follow. In earlier days, when sickness or suffering called, the late Mrs. Vidler responded to the call without thought of self. Many of the homely remedies of the pioneers were hers, and she was naturally born a nurse, patience and kindliness being among her virtues. Born at St. Albans' Hawkesbury River, her father was the late Captain George Dawes, master mariner, and one of the pioneer coastal traders who, early in life left the old world, where his father was Captain in the English Army, and had fought at the Battle of Waterloo, to take up the adventurous life of the new world in the Southern Hemisphere. Mrs. Vidler had only two surviving relatives in her family, a brother, Mr. George Dawes, of Kiama, who is also over eighty, and a sister, Mrs. Francis Herbert, of Port Macquarie, and leaves three sons in Messrs. George, John and Edward Vidler, of Jamberoo, and three daughters, Mrs. J. Booth and Mrs. E. Booth, of Jamberoo, and Mrs. A. Prior of Wollongong. Husband a farmer
Following the birth of John William, Jane took John to court in an attempt to have him pay maintenance. In the case heard on January 31st, Jane stated she had been living with William Vidler and Harriet during the early part of 1860, and had left to return home on March 27th.
Although John denied paternity, a number of witnesses stated he had claimed he was the father in earlier conversations. He was ordered to pay seven shillings per week for a year towards maintenance.

At a further hearing on March 21st, John admitted he had not paid anything. He was ordered to pay twenty-eight shillings or be gaoled for 12 months. He probably decided to marry her rather than go to gaol.

VIDLER—JACKSON.—September 5, at the residence of the bride's father, by the Rev. W. Sparling, Thomas Collins, second son of Samuel Vidler, of Illawarra, to Mary Ann, second daughter of William Jackson, of Forest Lodge. Evening News (Sydney, NSW : 1869 - 1931) Saturday 29 September 1883 p 4

MRS. THOS. VIDLER

The death of Mary Ann Vidler, wife of Mr. Thomas Vidler, of Orion-street, Lismore, came as a shock to many of her friends. Though she had been in ill-health for many years, death was not expected so soon. She passed peacefully away (after a short illness) on January 24 at the District Hospital, and was buried in the Methodist portion of the cemetery. Pastor

S. Tompkins (Baptist) assisted the Rev. A. F. Crapp at the graveside. A short service was held in the Methodist Church prior to the funeral. Five sons and five daughters are left to mourn the loss of a devoted mother.

The sons are Herbert, Frederick, Leonard, Basil and Lyle, all of Sydney.

Daughters are Mrs. C. Marshall (Gundagai), Mrs. A. Arthur (Gunning), Mrs. W. Irvine (Yungaburra, Qld.), Mrs. S. Pressick and Mrs B. Bannister (Lismore). Northern Star (Lismore, NSW : 1876 - 1954) Thursday 30 January 1930 p 4
