Awful Tragedy and Strange Proceedings.
…There had been some slight difference between Mrs. Yarnell and Donoughoe. All had been sky-larking, by blacking and greasing each others faces. Yarnell had left the house to obtain some grease. Mrs. Yarnell was cooking some meat in a frying-pan, and had a sharp-pointed butcher's knife in her hand; Donoughoe was in the centre of the room, approaching her, when she advanced to him. Some words passed between them, and the other two men were standing in the door-way, supposed to be keeping guard, as part of the frolic. One of them heard a heavy fall on the floor, and turning sharp round saw Mrs. Yarnell throw a knife on the table and then run into her bed-room- from which her husband then came and advanced to Donoughoe, then lying on the floor for the purpose of grazing his face, when one of the men exclaimed ' what are you about, man, he's dead !' …. Bathurst Advocate 30 June 1849
ILLAWARRA.-THE LATE TRAGEDY.-After posting my last communication on the 21st, the coroner returned, and held an inquest in the case already recorded. A jury having been sworn, the earth was removed from the coffin, the lid taken off, and the body viewed. No one having seen Mrs. Yarnell strike the blow, which she said was pure accident-the facts already stated having also been given in evidence-the jury returned their verdict of manslaughter, and Mrs Yarnell was allowed bail. Margaret Yarvell was charged with maliciously injuring a quantity of crockery and other property belonging to William H. Smith, of Mount Ousley, and valued at £10. Mr. Russell for accused.
Sergeant Robertson deposed that in company with Constable Clarke he arrested accused, who denied having broken anything belonging to complain ant, but admitted having broken a few articles, which were her own property.
Complainant deposed that he resided in a house on the Gibbons Estate at Mount Ousley, accused and her husband occupying a portion of the same dwelling , on Monday last she broke a quantity of crockery in the kitchen, and on the previous Sunday night she smashed some doors and windows with an American axe ; he did not see her smash the crockery, but his wife informed him that she had done so, the crockery was his property, and he also claimed the house and land, but he did not know who was the real owner.
Mr. Russell cross-examined complainant at great length with regard to the ownership of the property.
Fanny Jennings saw accused accidently stumble against the dresser in the kitchen, when some of the crockery fell on the floor; complainant’s wife was present at the time, but there was no quarrel between her and accused.
Complainant applied for a postponement of the case, as his wife was too ill to attend.
Mr. Russell said the real cause of nonattendance on the part of complainant's wife was that she was ashamed of his conduct.
The Bench declined to grant a postponement, and dismissed the case. Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950) Saturday 2 December 1893 Page 3

On Tuesday; 10th, the death occurred at the residence of her daughter (Mrs. Cunningham, Manly) of Mrs. S. Yates, late of Keiraville. Mrs. Yates, who had reached the venerable age of 88 years, arrived in New South Wales 45 years ago, sailing from Cheshire, England, with her family, and took up their residence at Mount Keira. Her late husband had lost his life in an accident some 8 or 9 years prior to that. For some years Mrs. Yates went out nursing around this locality. Three and a half years ago she fell in her home and broke her thigh, and, with the exception of an occasional short trip in a motor car, had not been able to leave her home. Up to the time of her accident she rarely missed being present at one service at least on Sundays in the Methodist Church, Mount Keira, of which she was a member, travelling from Zlotkowski Estate to Mount Keira until 84 years of age. Some eight or nine weeks back she left here to take up her residence with her daughters, and three weeks ago she was taken seriously ill, and died on the above date, leaving three daughters — Mrs. P. Cunningham, Mrs. H. J. Styles, and Mrs. W. West, (Earlwood, and one son, Mr. G. Yates, Mount Keira — to mourn the loss of a devoted mother. The funeral took place on Wednesday at Manly, the Rev. E. The Late Mrs. Youman.
The funeral of the late Mrs Margaret Youman, whose death occurred on Thursday, and to which brief reference was made in our last issue, took place on Friday, the remains being interred in the Presbyterian portion of the Cemetery. The large number present indicated the high regard in which the deceased lady was held, many coming from remote parts to pay the last tribute of respect.
Rev. E. N McKie, B.A., held a short service at her late residence before the funeral started for the Cemetery, and also conducted the rites at the grave side. At the conclusion of the service he referred to the long and exemplary life of deceased — one whose kindly nature was felt by all who came into contact with her, and whose life was full of good works. The coffin was carried from the hearse to the grave by her sons, Robert W., Joseph, Alex, Thomas, William, and her grandson, Cliff. Mr. John Youman, eldest son, was present, but owing to serious indisposition was prevented from joining with his brothers in this last act of filial affection. Besides the sons mentioned she leaves two daughters, Mrs. W. Broker (Kangaloon) and Miss Annie (Rosehill, Guyra). One son, James, made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War. The late Mrs Youman, whose maiden name was McPhail, was born on 7th March, 1831, at Glenelg, Inverness Shire, Scotland, and had, therefore, passed her ninety-fifth year by five months, with her parents she came to New South Wales in 1839, during the time of Governor Gipps
Shortly after their arrival the family went to Dapto, in the Illawarra district, when the father secured land and followed agricultural pursuits. At the age of 26 she married Mr Joseph Youman, who was also settled on the land there, and who pre-deceased her by about fourteen years. Here she lived till 1862, when her husband removed to Kangaloon, a few miles from Macquarie Pass, where he acquired another property. In those days this locality was practically a wilderness — to-day there is a fine road over the Mountain, and it is noted as a tourist resort. During her residence of twenty three years in this district she saw many changes, and the settlements at Moss Vale, Bowral, and Mittagong develop into thriving townships. Mr. Youman disposed of his property there in 1885, and the same year came to this district, securing the property known as ' Rosehill,' where for the past forty years deceased resided continuously. Many important changes she witnessed in this part and New England generally, which she could faithfully and accurately relate. To this fine old pioneer and Christian lady, the beautiful tribute to a noble character in another land and- in a different sphere of life can be fittingly applied — life's race well run, life's work well done, life's victory won—NOW COMETH REST, Guyra Argus (NSW : 1902 - 1954) Thursday 20 August 1925 p 2

IT is with feelings of regret, mingled with those of sympathy for the bereaved that I have to record the death of an old and much respected resident of this locality, the beloved wife of Mr. James Young of Toolijooa, Gerringong. The deceased had been ailing for the past two years; but anything of a serious nature was not feared, till, within the last three weeks when she became prostrated. Medical advice was called in and the proper remedies applied; but apparently with little avail, as the sufferer scarcely seemed to rally, but gradually became weaker and died on Tuesday morning at 4 o'clock. The immediate cause of death was, I understand, disease of the heart. The deceased was 54 years of age and a native of England. She was an active, intelligent woman, a kind wife, and an affectionate mother. She leaves a husband and children to mourn their loss.

Husband was a retired soldier and he brought his family to the colony for a better life. They landed in Tasmania where they were guests of the Governor, Sir George Arthur for a while as Elizabeth was heavily pregnant with their son Robert. Robert was born there and the Governor offered to give Robert junior a land grant to encourage the family to settle near Hobart but Robert Snr. insisted on moving on to the Illawarra. After some time in the Dapto region he settled on land at Jamberoo where he was assigned convicts and cleared the land. On retirement Robert and Elizabeth moved to Sydney but retained connections to the Jamberoo district with family and friends. Robert senior is said to be a cousin of Sir John Young, Governor of NSW from 1861 – 1867.

The call 'Home' came to Mrs. E. Young, the wife of the late Rev. P.S. Young, at Kempsey on Tuesday, 12th November, at the age of 86 years. Mrs. Young was staying with her daughter, Mrs. C. Knauer, when she was taken to the Macleay District Hospital with a fractured leg.
After two months of suffering she passed peacefully within the veil and was buried in the East Kempsey Cemetery beside her husband, who died in Kempsey in 1917.
The Rev. Kay Mason, assisted by the Rev. Jesson Fleming, conducted the service in the Kempsey Church and at the graveside. Mrs. Young shared for 38 years the ministries of her husband in the circuits to which they were appointed in the Primitive Methodist Church, and after union in the United Church. MRS. EMALINE YOUNG
The death occurred in the David Berry Hospital, on Thursday last, 3rd March, of an old and highly respected Berry resident, in the person of Mrs. Emaline Young, at the age of 78 years. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Phoenix Wells, of Gerringong. She married the late James D. Young, who acquired extensive timber country, bordering the Seven Mile Beach, and at Harley Hill, to which locality they moved some years later. In 1929 they went to Nowra, where the late Mr. Young continued business. During his long residence at Berry the late Mr. Young was for many years ring-master at Berry Shows and was a keen member of the Bowling and Rifle Clubs and “Broughton” Masonic Lodge. After her husband's death, in 1938, deceased returned to Berry and conducted a drapery business in Queen Street, until seven months ago, when, a severe attack of bronchitis necessitated her removal to the David Berry Hospital. Deceased will be sadly missed by many of our lady folk, who made her shop a “Mecca,” not only, for the social environment but more so for the kindly advice and practical help relative to the making and purchasing of wearing apparel, for the late Mrs. Young was an expert needlewoman-adequately proved by her many successes not only at South Coast Shows but at practically every show in the State. Her geniality and hospitality made many friends and admirers, who learned with deep regret of the passing of such a kindly and friendly personality. The older generation recall her prime a graceful figure, when riding in the old-time side-saddle style in equestrienne events at shows, and, let us add, side-saddle and whale-bone whip still in perfect preservation, were treasured by her as evidence of her show ring victories.
Two sons, Bert (136 Prince's Highway, Carlon) and Frank (8 Acacia Street, Gwynneville, Wollongong) survive: A daughter, who died very young, was interred in the family enclosure in the Gerringong cemetery with her parents. Son Bert, who served in the First World War, was severely wounded at Polygon wood, and suffered the loss of his right leg. There are six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Rev. C Wiler Clarke, who conducted the largely-attended service in St. Luke's Church, paid a glowing tribute to the Christian attributes of the deceased lady.
Deceased is survived by four sisters-Ada (Mrs. Popplewell, Kiama), Amelia (Mrs. Gilbert, Enmore), Nellie (Mrs. Phyliss, Sydney), Hannah (Mrs. Smith, Lindfield), and two brothers, William and Robert, both of Sydney. Mrs. Robert Young, of Raleigh.
BELLTNGEN, Friday. The death has occurred at “the Meadows,” Raleigh of Mrs. Young, relict of the late Air. Robert Young, in her 93rd year. The remains were removed to the Peace Memorial Church, Raleigh, where after a most impressive service they were laid to rest in a special vault at the church, beside those of her late husband, who predeceased her in June, of 1928. The service was conducted by Rev. O. N. Manny, of St. Margaret's. Bellingen, and a very large number of district residents attended to pay there last sad respects.
The late Mrs. Young, whose exemplary Christian life and charitable nature endeared her to all, was the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs. William Cole, of Jamberoo, and she was born at Jamberoo over 92 years ago. She received her early schooling at that centre, later entering the Rosebank Ladies' College,- which was then the leading school for the young ladies of the colony.
It was in those early days that the value of dairy cattle to the State, and the South Coast in particular, was being demonstrated, and her father, possessed of a remarkable knowledge of the breeding and selection of high production animals, rapidly gained fame as a breeder. His Illawarra Shorthorn tyre rapidly came to the forefront in the breeds of the State, and the pinnacle of honor was reached when his famous Melba XV was declared to be the world's champion butter-fat cow.
On August 28, 1864 (70 years ago) the late Mrs. Young was married to Mr Robert Young, who was born in Tasmania (then Van Diemen's Land) in 1835. About 38 years ago the late Mrs. Young came with her husband and the members of their growing family to the Bellinger River, where two of her sons took over the management of the Raleigh estate, which was later named “The Meadows. '
As a breeding centre of the famous Illawarra Shorthorn stock, “The Meadows” achieved a reputation which travelled far beyond the borders of the State. The late Airs. Young was the last surviving member of the William Cole family although she was the eldest child- Her four brothers and four sisters predeceased her.
During her life at Raleigh she enjoyed the highest respect and regard that, any woman could be held in by friends and acquaintances. She lived an exemplary life, and not only devoted herself to the domestic duties of the large household as a loving wife and mother, but was a Staunch and most active supporter of her church, playing a very prominent part in the establishment of the beautiful Anglican Peace Memorial Church at Raleigh Despite her active early days and the constant duties which devolved on her in the upbringing of so large a family. The late Mrs. Young possessed her faculties in a remarkable degree to the end of her days, and it was quite unnecessary for her to use glasses to end even the smallest print, or to do the finest needlework.
The late Mrs. Young is survived by a grown-up family of five sons and four daughters. Three daughters –predeceased her in addition to her husband, who also lived to the grand old age of 93 years. Twenty -five grandchildren survive, there are also twenty-seven great-grandchildren. Daily Examiner (Grafton, NSW : 1915 - 1954) Saturday 21 July 1934 p 4

Mrs Young was the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Hugh Dudgeon, of the famed Hillview Park A.I.S. stud on the South Coast. OBITUARY
The death took place on Tuesday of one of the pioneers of the district in the person of Mrs. Ziems, of Corrimal, aged 87 years. She was in normal health until Friday night, and attended the Continental that evening, on returning home she complained of not feeling well. On Sunday she went to bed, and on Monday morning the doctor was called in. The late Mrs. Ziems was born in the Camden district, and came to Fairy Meadow when three months old, and has resided in the district ever since. She had a wide circle of friends, and leaves a grown-up family to mourn their loss. The remains were interred in the Wollongong Cemetery yesterday afternoon. A gloom was cast over Albion Park and district on Tuesday evening –when it became known that Mrs. H. Ziems, wife of Mr. H. G. Ziems, had suddenly passed away. -The late Mrs. Ziems had always experienced good health up to the last few months, although her condition at any time had never caused her family any anxiety. However during the last few days she contracted a cold, pneumonia supervened, and she passed peacefully away in the presence of her husband and children at 8.30- p.m. A sad feature of the occurrence is that her son, Selwyn, had only left for the front ten days ago.
The late Mrs. Ziems took an active part in church and school work, as well as all local public movements, Ladies' Patriotic League. In time of sickness and distress she was always one of the first, with her sympathy and help, but most of her kindnesses was done in an unostentatious way, and many people in the district will have cause to reverence her memory. By the many young people that gathered at her home, she will be, sadly missed, as she always strove to make things happy for them. A husband, three daughters and three sons, as well as a loving circle of friends remain to mourn their loss. The funeral took place on Thursday when the remains were interred in the Church of England cemetery, Albion Park, .. Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950) Friday 15 October 1915 p 5

We have this week to record, and we do so with sincerer regret, the premature death of Mrs. J. H. L. Zillman, the wife of the Episcopalian clergyman lately resident in Kiama.
Mrs Zillman, who was about three weeks since delivered of her fourth child, had previously been suffering considerably from cold, was attacked subsequently to the birth by succession of maladies, and succumbed at last to inflammation of the intestines, Communication by telegraph and otherwise had, of course, been maintained with the Rev. Mr. Zillman, who removed not long since to Queensland, having left Mrs. Z. with her relatives in Kiama on account of her approaching accouchement, He was to leave Brisbane, we understand, at 1 o'clock on Tuesday, the precise time, or very nearly so, at which his wife's death took place. Mrs. Zillman, whose Christian name was Catherine, was the third daughter of Thos. Kendall, Esq., J.P., and was about thirty two years of age. The funeral took place at 2 p.m. yesterday, and was attended, we need hardly say, by a very large concourse of the residents of Kiama and its neighbourhood, The Kiama Independent, and Shoalhaven Advertiser (NSW : 1863 - 1947) Thursday 5 August 1875 p 2
