Maria’s grand-daughter Jean Beale/Robertson (nee Osborne) tells us that her grandmother was a gentle, sweet, pretty-faced woman of slight but tall build, and of great serenity. She spoke with an English accent because as a young girl she was taken to England to complete her education at Ponders End, just out of London. She was loved by everybody and so it was no wonder that when a young Government official came to Illawarra in the early fifties, as Clerk of Petty Sessions, he fell in love with her and they married in 1850. She was aged 22. The groom was Alfred Allatson Turner who it seems had been appointed Crown lands Commissioner in 1845, and later became Police Magistrate in Wollongong and District. He had been a volunteer explorer with Edmund Kennedy in 1847 for which his diary remains an important historical document. He probably met Maria through working with her magistrate father Charles at the Court House Maria’s grand-daughter Jean Beale/Robertson (nee Osborne) tells us that her grandmother was a gentle, sweet, pretty-faced woman of slight but tall build, and of great serenity. Turner, from paralysis. The deceased was in her usual health on Monday, the 20th inst., when she left home on horseback to pay a visit to her niece (Mrs. Hazleton), who happened to be unwell. On passing Mr. Rogan's residence, about 400 yards from her home, she was suddenly attacked with paralysis of the left side. In attempting to alight from her horse, she fell helplessly upon the road. Several members of Mr. Rogan's family wore quickly upon the spot, and had her conveyed home. Dr. Thompson was sent for in the meantime, but, notwithstanding medical aid and the unremitting attention of friends, she expired at noon on the following day. He remains were interred in their last resting place at the C. E. cemetery, Albion Park, on the 22ud inst., by a very large concourse of people, the solemn funeral service being conducted by the Rev. J. Stack. Mrs. Turner was one of those characters whom to know was to admire. After an acquaintance of 25 years, I can safely say that she united together the excellent qualities of a good neighbour, a faithful and devoted wife, with that of a quiet and earnest Christian. Great sympathy is felt for Mr. Turner in his sad bereavement. Having no family nor any relations in the colony, his loss will be keenly felt. Mrs. Turner was 47 years of age at the time of her death. Having enough of this world's good, Mr. Turner some time ago retired from farming pursuits, and latterly contemplated returning with Mrs., Turner to England to spend the remainder of their days there, but it was not to be. //Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950)// **Tuesday 28 April 1885** p 2
