 Quite a shock was given to relatives and many friends when it became known Mrs. Synott, senr., of Rose Hill, had been found dead in a bedroom at Garlick's Hotel, Byron Bay.
-Some few days ago the deceased, who had been ailing since the death of her husband, the late Mr. John Synott, nearly two years ago, went to visit her sister, Mrs. O'Keefe, Burringbar and her son, Thomas. The latter resides a few miles from Mullumbimby, and on Tuesday night she came back as far as Byron Bay, and put up at Garlick's Hotel, intending to return home the next morning. About 3 am., a housemaid, going into her room, found the deceased had passed away peacefully in her sleep. The late Mrs. Synott was a member, of the Boyle family, Gerringong, who ranked upon the oldest and most esteemed families of the South Coast. She came with her husband and family over thirty years ago to the Richmond, settling at Rose Hill, Goolmangar, where they have resided ever since, and where her name has ever been a household word for charitable deeds and neighbourly kindness. So her death will be a distinct loss to the community in which she resided. A devout Catholic she was a strict adherent and attendant at her Church. Yet class or creed came not in her thoughts when in the old pioneering days a call, perhaps in the middle of a wet or stormy night came for her assistance and help, which was always given willingly and cheerfully.
